Yuba City captures D-III title

May 5, 2008 11:55 pm

Justin Estrada shot a 5-under par, 67, to lead the Honkers past the field at Peach Tree Golf Course and Country Club and to a Division-III Sac-Joaquin Section championship on Monday.

Yuba City, which went undefeated in the Tri-County Conference this season, edged Benicia by posting a 420, just three strokes fewer than Benicia's 423.

Yuba City's John Holloway finished with an 82, Kameron Buzdas followed with an 87, while teammates Joe Bauer added an 89 and Donnie Triphan and Ryan Wheeler each recorded a 95.

With the win, the Honkers will play at the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament at Stevinson Ranch in Turlock next Tuesday.

"We'll go down there and get a practice round in over the weekend, and we'll see how it goes," said Yuba City coach Kent Meyers.

Just shooting a 67 alone delighted Meyers, but the coach was even more impressed with Estrada's score with the conditions the team played under.

"We were shooting from the black tees in the heat and people were gunning for them today, and they didn't crumble, they stayed focused and played well."

Second-place finishers Benicia with join Yuba City at the section masters, along with Del Campo's Mason Welch (78), Rio Americano's Bryson Boatwright (78) and Woodland's Chris Armas (79).
