Colusa tops Williams
The banged up and bruised up Colusa High football team put the right pieces in place Friday, sewing up a 48-14 win over visiting Williams.
The Redskins (4-3, 2-2 MVL) continued utilizing "plug-and-play" formations — mainly plugging healthy players into a variety of positions normally occupied by those players now injured.
And play they did.
Hayden Meyers capped a 46-yard drive on Colusa's first possession by scoring from a yard out, with Luis Benitez adding the PAT. On Williams' ensuing possession, Dylan McPherson stepped into a passing lane and intercepted a Carlos Velasquez throw and returned it 40 yards for a pick-six, with another Benitez PAT.
The Yellowjackets then put together an eight-play drive that culminated with Velasquez connecting with Fermin Hernandez on a 30-yard TD pass, with Hernandez also running in the conversion to cut the Colusa lead to 14-8 at the end of the first quarter.
The Redskins piled on 21 points in the second period, on one- and six-yard Jeremy Hernandez keepers, and a 16-yard scamper by Dylan McPherson, set up by a Geoff McPherson interception. The score stood at 35-8 at the break.
Williams (1-6, 1-3) turned to some razzle-dazzle in the third period, as Velasquez found Martin Salcedo with a 30-yard scoring pass off a halfback option.
