Roundup: Geyer cards low round
East Nicolaus' Taddy, Gardner also advance in Section golf
Pierce High's Ben Geyer was low medalist Tuesday at the Northern Section Div. II boys golf tournament.
Geyer, a junior, shot a 2-under-par 70 at Arrowhead Golf Club in Alturas. He and two East Nicolaus golfers - Blake Taddy and Jessee Gardner - qualified for the Northern Section championship tournament, which will be held Tuesday at Graeagle Golf Club in Graeagle.
Taddy shot a 74 and Gardner carded a 78.
En route to his winning round, Geyer recorded five birdies. He birdied the par-4, 307-yard fifth hole, the par-5, 487-yard eighth hole, the par-4, 339-yard 10th hole, the par-5, 502-yard 17th hole and the par-4, 325-yard 18th hole.
"All of the putts (for birdie) were pretty short," Geyer said. "Except for one, they were all within eight feet."
The longest birdie putt was 15 feet, Geyer added.
The top four individuals from the Section championship advance to the NorCal finals.
Maddalena qualifies for Masters
Faith Christian's Nick Maddalena qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section Masters Tournament, after shooting a one-over-par 72 at the Div. VII tournament at Castle Oaks Golf Course in Ione.
The Lions (428) finished second as a team to Turlock Christian (416). Other Faith scorers include Derek Strain (81), Carson Risenhoover (84), Carson Mitchell (88) and Grant Watkins (103).
The Masters tournament will be held Monday at Stevenson Ranch Golf Curse in Turlock.
TENNIS
Colfax 5, Marysville 2
David Rac won his No. 1 singles match 6-0, 6-0, but it wasn't enough as the Indians' season came to an end with a loss to Colfax in the first round of the Sac-Joaquin Section Div. III team playoffs.
Ploua Thao and Yer Thor recorded a 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 in No. 2 girls doubles for Marysville (14-4).
BOYS TENNIS
Willows 8, Sutter 1
The Huskies saw their season come to an end with a loss to Willows in the first round of the Northern Section Div. II team playoffs.
Tyler Johnson and Aaron Dodd recorded a 7-5, 7-5 victory in No. 2 doubles.
BASEBALL
Sutter 11, Lincoln 0
Mitch Sanders, Dariusz Ratajczak and Derek Carothers combined for a three-hit shutout and Jeremy Birmingham went 2-for-5 with a double, triple, and three RBIs to give the Huskies a nonleague win in their regular season finale.
Carothers went 3-for-4, Sanders went 3-for-5 with an RBI and Daniel Denton went 2-for-3 with a double and drove in two runs for Sutter (23-5), which will host a first round Northern Section Div. II playoff game Friday at 4 p.m.
SOFTBALL
Faith Chr. 25, Sierra Chr. 2
Lindsey Barnett went 4-for-4 with a home run and five RBIs and Hannah Baber went 2-for-2 with a home run, double and four RBIs to lead the Lions to a Sacramento Metropolitan Athletic League win in a game.
Marla Strong went 3-for-4 with a triple, Gabi Hinz went 4-for-5 and Justine Ekdawky went 2-for-3 and drove in four runs for Faith (3-5, 3-3).
Lindhurst 9, Elliot Chr. 8
Kristin Kline drove in two runs in the top of the seventh inning, helping the Blazers rally from an 8-6 deficit for the nonleague road win.
Alisha Benge went 3-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs scored for Lindhurst (13-7-1), Morgan Thome went 2-for-4 with two RBIs and two runs and Jordan Stanaland was 2-for-4 with an RBI and run scored.
GIRLS SOCCER
Lindhurst 3, San Juan 1
Senior Lynette Alvarez scored two second-half goals as the Blazers broke a 1-1 halftime stalemate and knocked off the Spartans at home in the Golden Empire League finale.
Andrea Beck scored the first-half goal and assisted on one of Alvarez's goals.
Lindhurst (7-6, 7-5) got strong midfield play from senior Tracy Yang, and strong goalie play from Brenna Gates and senior Veronica Garcia.
Bradshaw Chr. 4, Faith Chr. 1
The Lions ended their regular season slate with a SMAL loss to league-champion Bradshaw Christian on the road.
Katie Hall scored on an assist from Cami Bicknell and Jessica Shirley, Robin Hall, Bicknell and Stephanie Sluder all played well defensively for the Lions (16-3, 8-2).
JV BASEBALL
Yuba City 13, River Valley 5
Andrew Garcia went 3-for-4 with five RBIs and Walker Shaw went 3-for-5 and drove in two runs to lead Yuba City to a Tri-County Conference win over the cross-town rival Falcons.
Jared Colvin went 3-for-4 for the Honkers (14-11, 11-2), who can clinch at least a share of the league title with by winning their final two games.
Eric Gutierrez went 2-for-3 for River Valley (9-14, 7-6). Gabe Betancourt had a triple and an RBI, Dustin Smith tripled and Junior Martinez had a double and an RBI.

Yuba City 11, Casa Roble 1
Cody Kent went 3-for-3 with a triple and a double and he pitched a complete-game, allowing three hits over six innings, in the Honkers' win.
Raul Lozano went 2-for-4, Tyler Olson and Blake Parks were both 2-for-3, Hank Kirby tripled and Tyler Olson doubled for Yuba City (18-5-1, 9-4).
