Prep Roundup: Sutter, Lindhurst win doubleheaders
Sutter High's baseball team is one win away from a championship.
The Huskies swept a doubleheader from Butte View League foe Winters on Thursday and with a win against Gridley today can clinch at least a share of the BVL title.
Wheatland hosts Orland in a doubleheader today and is also in the mix for the league championship if they sweep the Trojans.
Both of Sutter's win came in dramatic fashion on Thursday.
The Huskies won a walk-off single from Dylan Russell in game one. Russell also went the distance on the mound to pick up the 10-9 win.
Russell ripped a single up the middle to plate Weston Childers in the bottom of the seventh.
Nathan Ahlers went 4 for 4 with two RBIs and both Childers and Morgan Osgood were 2 for 4. Osgood doubled and knocked in two runs, while Childers knocked in one.
The slugfest continued in game two with the Huskies coming away with a 13-12 victory.
Sutter (18-7, 9-3) trailed 10-3 in the third inning before exploding for six runs in the bottom of the third. Osgood broke a 10-10 tie in the bottom of the fifth with a two-run homer.
Osgood finished 4 for 5 with three RBIs. Childers was 3 for 4 and knocked in three runs, while Ben Eisenbarth, Lucas Hensley, Mat Sanders and Philip Robledo each had two hits.
The Huskies' JV team won 11-0 and 7-0 over the Warriors.
In the first game, Brad Bonnenfant tallied nine strikeouts in five innings on the hill and Lucas Cryer was 2 for 4 with three RBIs, a double and a triple. Forrest Smith was 2 for 3 with two home runs in the second game. Franklin Tarke and Trevor Carr also went yard for the Huskies (25-1, 11-0).
Lindhurst 10, West Campus 3
Lindhurst 17, West Campus 7
The Blazers scored seven runs in the 11th inning to win a continuation game and followed that up by beating up West Campus in five innings to sweep a Golden Empire League doubleheader on the road.
Timmy Zucco went 3 for 6 and picked up the win in the continuation game. Styven Fanning also went 3 for 6, Bubby Shanahan was 3 for 5 and Fernando Cortes ignited the rally with a sacrifice bunt in the 11th inning for Lindhurst.
Zucco outdid himself in the second game by going 4 for 4 with a pair of doubles and driving in eight runs.
Andrew Sutton went 2 for 3 with a double and Erick Tallman also went 2 for 3 for the Blazers (10-10, 8-5), who locked up a berth in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V playoffs with the victories.
SOFTBALL
Sutter 9, Winters 1
Courtney Gravel went 4 for 4 with a double and Sara Hungrige and Amy Robinson both went 3 for 3 in the home BVL win for the Huskies (18-6, 7-3).
TENNIS
Marysville players advance in sectionals
A pair of Indians doubles teams advanced to the second day of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoffs.
Jamie Hurdt and Annie Lin moved on in girls competition after topping teams from Liberty Ranch (5-7, 6-1, 6-0) and Ripon Christian (6-3, 6-1). Armando Montejano and Terry Prince advanced in boys play after beating Forest Lake Christian (6-0, 6-3) and Vista Del Lago (6-2, 6-3).
