Prep Roundup: Falcons get by Blazers
Junior pitcher Courtney Smith had 12 strikeouts to help the River Valley softball team to a 5-1 home victory over Lindhurst on Monday.
Shelby Carpenter went 2-for-3 with an RBI, while Smith and Katie Carpenter each had a RBI for the Falcons (2-1).
Dylanne Brown started off the game with a home run to left field for the Blazers.
Jennifer Rodriguez went 2-for-2 for Lindhurst (6-2).
Marysville 8, Gridley 1
Freshman Tressa Arostegui notched 10 strikeouts and allowed only two hits in the Indians' road victory.
Danielle Ferrari and McKenzie Kraus each went 2-for-3 for Marysville (1-1).
Marysville's junior varsity team beat Gridley 10-7. Maddie Harvell had 12 strikeouts from the circle and went 2-for-5 with four RBIs, Alexa Roberts had a pair of hits and a pair of RBIs for Marysville (2-0).
BASEBALL
Maxwell 10, Durham 2
Tyler Wells and James Bowen combined on a two-hitter from the mound to lead the Panthers to a victory at Durham. Wells struck out seven in four innings, while Bowen came on in relief in the fifth to finish off the win.
Bowen also went 2-4, while Dylan deWit went 2-for-5 with two doubles and four RBIs for Maxwell (5-1).
GOLF
Sutter tops BVL foes
Dayton Pierce was the lowman with a score of 39 in the Huskies' victory at Table Mountain Golf Course.
Logan Ross shot a 42 and Cody Shogren finished with a 46 for Sutter.
For Gridley, Kevin Creech hit a 46. Wheatland's lowman Darrell Loftih had a 48.
Yuba City takes 7th
The Yuba City golf team competed at the 20-team Pleasant Valley Invite at Bidwell Park in Chico and finished in seventh place.
Donnie Triphan was the lowman with an 84. John Holloway had an 87 and Joe Bauer shot a 91. Gus Wiezorek finished with a 92 and Kameron Buzdas had a 95 for Sutter.
River Valley rolls Inderkum
Zach Cross was the lowman with a 45 to help the Falcons to a victory at Coyote Run Golf Course.
Mario Michelo and Lucas Von each finished with a 47 for River Valley (3-2, 1-0).
TENNIS
Wheatland 6, Live Oak 3
The Lions held their own against Wheatland in singles play, but the Pirates got the best of doubles and took home the victory, handing Live Oak their first loss of the season.
The teams of Theo Lepeau and Cameron Bushling (8-4), Steffan Wagman and Derek Zepp (8-2) and Tyler Zepp and Anthony Harmon (9-8) earned doubles victories.
In singles, Wagman (10-6), Bushling (10-6) and Tyler Zepp (10-3) for Wheatland (4-2).
No. 1 player Pardeep Cheema (10-4), Donny Bryant (11-9) and Edgar Yañez (10-7) earned victories for Live Oak (4-1).
SOCCER
Capital Chr. 3, Lindhurst 0
Alex Cook and DeeDee Yang were credited for their mid-field play, but the Blazers fell in their season-opening road game.
Offensively, Andrea Beck and Andria Anderson played well for Lindhurst (0-1, 0-1).
Marysville 3, San Juan 0
Sophomore Saharay Lomeli scored a goal in her first varsity game, while Mariah Surface added a pair of goals for the Indians in their first GEL game.
Gavin Frost added an assist for Marysville (3-4-2).
JV SOCCER
Capital Chr. 7, Lindhurst 0
Juanita Rivera had four saves, but the Blazers were shutout in their first game of the season.
Kia Mai Vang was credited for her defensive efforts for Lindhurst (0-1).
