Yellowjackets seek to sting Colusa
Two county rivals will meet in a Mid-Valley League battle when the Yellowjackets and Redskins renew acquaintances tonight in Colusa. With linebacker Hayden Meyers, fullback Carlos Gutierrez and the rest of Colusa's 22-player roster battling the injury bug, the Redskins (4-3 overall, 2-2 MVL) have dropped games to league front-runners East Nicolaus and Hamilton in the last two weeks.
Williams (1-6, 1-3) is led by the all-around talent of quarterback Carlos Velasquez, who has passed for 986 yards and 10 touchdowns, while also leading the team in rushing, where he's scored three TDs.
Natomas (3-3) at Yuba City (4-2)
The Honkers look to keep things rolling and improve to 2-0 in Tri-County Conference play when they welcome the Nighthawks into Honker Stadium. Junior Taylor Rowe has emerged as the primary weapon in Yuba City's running game by rushing for 720 yards and five touchdowns, while Bernell Barmore's 446 yards receiving and five touchdowns leads the Honkers in the air.
The Nighthawks edged Pioneer 26-13 last week in their TCC opener.
Las Plumas (0-7) at Wheatland (6-1)
The high-scoring Pirates could have a big night in store when they welcome the winless Thunderbirds into John Sohrakoff Jr. Field for a Butte View League contest. Paced by senior fullback Vince Vetrone's 757 yards rushing and 14 touchdowns, Wheatland (2-0 BVL) is averaging more than 40 points per game.
Things do not bode well for a Las Plumas team which has been outscored 260-50 while starting the year 0-7.
Winters (4-3) at Sutter (5-2)
The Huskies (2-0 BVL) look to stretch their league unbeaten streak to 16 straight games when they welcome the Warriors into Wayne Gadberry Field for a BVL battle. Running backs Justin Gildemeister and Ryan Cargill each topped the 100-yard mark in Sutter's 39-26 win over Orland last week and have combined for nearly 1,000 yards on the ground for the season. However, Sutter's strength is its defense with Nick Hecker recording four of Sutter's seven sacks a week ago.
Winters (1-1 BVL) came up short in a 25-7 loss to Wheatland last week after crushing Las Plumas 47-13 to open league. San Juan (0-6) at Lindhurst (1-5)
The Blazers (1-1 GEL) picked up that elusive first victory with a 16-8 victory at Golden Sierra last week and will look for the same result tonight when they welcome the Spartans into to Dean Miller Stadium for a Golden Empire League tilt. Senior running back Angel Vega spearheads Lindhurst's offense with 605 yards rushing and two touchdowns on the year, including a big 140-yard performance last week.
The Spartans (0-3 GEL) haven't done much on either side of the ball over their opening six games and have been outscored 250-26 on the year.
Trinity (6-2) at Pierce (4-3)
The Bears look to rebound from last week's 20-12 setback to Durham when they take on the Wolves in a key Sacramento Valley League contest. Pierce (2-1 SVL) is led by senior running back Rudy Godinez on the offensive side of the ball, while juniors Raul Cardenas and Armando Colso spearhead the Bears' defensive unit.
Trinity comes in riding a six-game winning streak and has risen to the top of the SVL standings with a perfect 4-0 mark to open league.
Univ. Prep (0-5) at Maxwell (5-3)
The red-hot Panthers look to extend their winning streak to five games when they open Evergreen League play against visiting University Prep of Redding. Maxwell's new-look spread offense has been on a tear over the last four weeks, averaging a stellar 43 points per contest.
The points could pile up again versus the visiting Panthers, who have been outscored 148-13 on the year while going 0-5.
River Valley (2-4) at Woodland (0-6)
The Falcons have a golden opportunity to halt their three-game losing skid when they travel to Woodland to meet the Wolves in a TCC clash. River Valley will no doubt come in hungry and with something prove after a tough 67-0 loss to a powerhouse Inderkum team last week in which nothing went right.
The Falcons should have a much easier time this week against a Wolves team that has shown little bite and are still searching for their first win of the season after a 41-6 pounding by Yuba City last week.
Gridley (2-5) at Orland (2-5)
The Bulldogs (1-1 BVL) look to capture their second straight victory when they travel to Orland for a BVL matchup against the Trojans. Senior Dakota Sisk led the charge in Gridley's 28-12 victory over Las Plumas a week ago, finishing with 136 yards rushing and three touchdowns to go along with an interception, a fumble recovery and a blocked field goal on defense.
The Trojans (0-2 BVL) come in following back-to-back losses to Wheatland and Sutter to open league play.
Biggs (2-5) at Hamilton (5-2)
The Wolverines will have their work cut out for them when they travel to Hamilton City to take on the MVL-powerhouse Braves. Biggs (0-4 MVL) has struggled since beginning league competition and has been outscored 131-6 during a current four-game losing stretch.
And as if things weren't already bad enough for the Wolverines: Hamilton (3-1 MVL) comes in following a 35-0 setback to Portola last week and will no doubt be out for blood.
Marysvile (3-3) at Lincoln (6-0)
The Indians take a break from their GEL slate with a drive to Lincoln to take on the formidable Fighting Zebras. Marysville comes into the game on a roll and has cruised to three straight wins to open league play while averaging a solid 33 points per game.
Michael Barabin has been the Indians' catalyst by posting a team-best 703 yards rushing and six touchdowns while leading the team in tackles with 11.7 per game.
