Redskins volleyball downs Yellowjackets
Comments 0 | Recommend 0It was a colossal combat in Colusa County on Thursday, as the Pierce and Colusa High volleyball teams locked up in battle — and for the Redskins, it was a must-win to keep their playoff aspirations alive.
They are very much alive and kicking.
The scores were close, but Colusa grabbed some momentum toward the end of the third game and carried it into the fourth to earn a 25-23, 22-25, 26-24, 25-14 victory.
After splitting the first two sets, the third game became a toss-up with extended rallies punctuated by diving digs. It was a point away from being in Pierce's pocket, until Colusa's Kati Hunt calmly took the ball with Colusa trailing 20-24 and proceeded to serve out and give Colusa a 26-24 win.
That momentum carried over into the deciding game, as a Caroline Meyers kill and dink, along with an ace from Yasmin Garcia stretched the lead to 13-4 and Pierce didn't close the gap to less than three the rest of the way.
Meyers and Lexi Kraft shared the team lead in kills with nine apiece, with Magaly Acevedo adding five. Acevedo drew four aces, while Katelyn Mena and Andee Clare each served up a pair. Acevedo also put up a team-high 15 assists.
The Redskins closed out the regular season 5-5 in the SVL and 7-13 overall. Pierce finished 2-7, 5-16.
