Prep Roundup: Morehead places fourth at state wrestling tournament
Sutter High senior Austin Morehead finished fourth in the 189-pound division of the CIF State Wrestling Tournament in Bakersfield on Saturday, earning a medal at the prestigious event for the second straight year.
Morehead entered the day with a perfect 3-0 record before dropping his first match to Calvary Temple's Morgan McIntosh, the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the division.
The three-time state qualifier rebounded with a second-round pin over Vacaville's Adam De la Garza before dropping a 9-3 decision to Santiago's Derrick Hawkins in the semis.
McIntosh ended up winning the event, while Hawkins took third.
Lindhurst's Anthony Vega just missed the medal stand in the 140-pound class after dropping a 6-0 decision to Irvine's Walker Slaughter in his first match of the day. Nevertheless, Vega finished in the top 12 in the state after winning four straight matches on Friday.
"He had a great tournament," Blazers coach Rob Taylor said. "To drop the first match and then go 4-0 was huge. He had a great year."
Vega finished the year with a school-record 51 wins while winning five of the eight tournaments he entered.
BASEBALL
Biggs 9, Los Molinos 8
Emilio Marquez went 2-for-4 with two RBIs to lead the Wolverines to a victory over the host Bulldogs in the championship game of the Glenn Cox Tournament in Los Molinos.
Brian Carr and Christian Callaway smacked a pair of hits each and Michael Torres went 1-for-3 with double and three RBIs for Biggs (3-0).
Maxwell 11, Quincy 2
James Bowen went 2-for-4 with a triple to lead the Panthers to a victory in the final day of the Los Molinos tournament. Tyler Wells smacked a double for Maxwell (1-1) in the win.
Wheatland finishes strong in Redding
The Pirates picked up a big win and a tie at the Redding Round Robin Tournament after losing two straight on Friday.
Wheatland took Yreka to eight innings and ended with a 5-5 draw in the first game. Nolan West was 2-for-4 with a home run in the top of the eighth to take the lead. Nano Panteloglow went seven innings and Sean Rawlin finished it up on the mound.
In the nightcap, Wheatland shutout Trinity 12-0. Dan Hernandez was a perfect 4-for-4 with a double and three RBIs. Javi Lopez was 3-for-3 while Zach Biddle and Luke Crawley each had a pair of hits for the Pirates (1-2-1).
GIRLS SOCCER
Faith goes 2-1 at Big Valley
Faith Christian beat Turlock Christian 3-1 and shutout Denair 3-0 before dropping a 1-0 decision to Ripon at the Big Valley Christian Tournament.
Sarah Hall scored two goals against Turlock Christian, while Alex Arnold added a another. Hall later posted a hat trick in the victory over Denair.
Lions' goalkeeper Voo Lee had a total of 21 saves over the three games to key the Faith Christian defense.
TRACK AND FIELD
Crosby, Kennedy take second
River Valley's Kim Crosby finished second in the 400 and Vanessa Kennedy placed second in the 100-meter hurdles at the 30-team Cal Invitational at Bella Vista High.
Crosby clocked in at 59.67 seconds, while Kennedy timed in at 17.89.
For the boys, Francisco Romero placed fifth in the shot put with a throw of 39-feet, 11⁄2 inches. Jake Edwards finished in seventh place in the 110-meter hurdles with a time of 17.6.
JV BASEBALL
Sutter 9, Marysville 1
Tyler Pack went 2-for-4 with a double and two RBIs and Phillip Robledo was 2-for-3 with a double and two RBIs to lead the Huskies to a win in the title game of the Sutter JV Tournament.
