Prep Roundup: Morehead places fourth at state wrestling tournament

Sutter High senior Austin Morehead finished fourth in the 189-pound division of the CIF State Wrestling Tournament in Bakersfield on Saturday, earning a medal at the prestigious event for the second straight year.

Morehead entered the day with a perfect 3-0 record before dropping his first match to Calvary Temple's Morgan McIntosh, the No. 1 ranked wrestler in the division.

The three-time state qualifier rebounded with a second-round pin over Vacaville's Adam De la Garza before dropping a 9-3 decision to Santiago's Derrick Hawkins in the semis.

McIntosh ended up winning the event, while Hawkins took third.

Lindhurst's Anthony Vega just missed the medal stand in the 140-pound class after dropping a 6-0 decision to Irvine's Walker Slaughter in his first match of the day. Nevertheless, Vega finished in the top 12 in the state after winning four straight matches on Friday.

"He had a great tournament," Blazers coach Rob Taylor said. "To drop the first match and then go 4-0 was huge. He had a great year."
