Roundup: Several RV speedsters heading to sub-sections
Geyer, Pierce move on to golf's NorCals in Chico
Woodland dominated the Tri-County Conference track and field championships at Inderkum on Wednesday, but several River Valley High athletes still qualified for the upcoming Sac-Joaquin sub-sections.
A sweep in the varsity boys 200-meter run, a new school record in the boys' 4x400 and Carolyn McBride, a freshman who took four first-place finishes, were all among the highlights.
McBride took first in the 1,600 (6:41.04), the 800 (2:57.61), the 400 (1:18.28) and as a member of the 4x400 (5:04.12). Elyse Dewey, Nicole Bendorff and Elyssa Fuh were the other runners. Dewey also took first in the 100 hurdles (19.12) and 300 hurdles (58.69). With the points, the River Valley girls JV team took first at the event.
The Falcons' varsity boys finished third and Yuba City took fourth, while the Falcons' varsity girls' team finished fourth. Yuba City took fifth.
Brandon Wolucka (23.49), Jordan Vida (23.66) and Keith Wager (23.79) finished 1-2-3 to help River Valley record a sweep in the 200, while the three runners, along with Justin Brousseau took first in the 4x100 (44.66) for the second straight year for River Valley.
Brousseau, Wolucka, Wager and Singh also took second in the 4x400 for a new school record of 3:35.58. Vida took third in the long jump (20-feet, 4-inches), while Wolucka took third in the 100 (11.52) and Brousseau finished fourth in the 300 hurdles (43.74).
Amandeep Singh took fourth in the 1,600 (4:47.82), behind Abdul Ghafour (4:53.09), who took third. Singh also took third in the 800 (2:03.81), while Ghafour finished second in the 3,200 (10:52.94).
On the girls' side, Kym Crosby won the 400 (59.61) and finished second in each of the 200 (27.06) and the 100 (13.05).
Vanessa Kennedy took third in the 100 hurdles (18.37) and third in the 300 hurdles (51.35), while Hayley Thompson took second in shot put (28-8) and Meredith Salazar took fourth in the 3,200 (14:02.65).

Geyer, Pierce move on
Pierce High's Ben Geyer and Sutter's Dayton Pierce are headed to NorCals, after finishing third and fourth, respectively at the Northern Section Championships at Bailey Creek Golf Course on Tuesday.
Geyer shot a 70 and Pierce clubbed a 72 to medal. Pierce had play three extra holes in a playoff to earn his medal after tying for fourth. He sunk a 10-foot putt to stamp the win.
The two will play in the NorCal Championships at Butte Creek Golf Course and Country Club in Chico on Monday.
SOCCER
Mariposa 3, Marysville 0
The Marysville girls soccer team fell 3-0 to Mariposa in the first round of a Sac-Joaquin Section Division VI opener.
"We played well, but I don't think we were prepared for the trip or the playoffs in general," said Marysville coach Chris Osborne. "The girls unfortunately made a mistake early, but we played really well after that."
Osborne credited Marlaina Tiff defensively, Jennifer Valencia and Mariah Surface up front and Wendy Arechiga in the midfield.
The Indians finished the season 8-6-2.
BASEBALL
Central Valley 6, Sutter 3
Blake Ahlers went 1-for-3 with two RBIs, Dariusz Ratajczak scored two runs and Zach Prosser hit a RBI double, but it wasn't enough as No. 7 Sutter (14-11) fell on the road to No. 2 Central Valley (30-2) in a Northern Section Division II playoff opener.
Central Valley scored five runs in the second inning off just two hits. Sutter scored a pair of runs in the sixth and one in the first.
