Prep Roundup: Indians grab third spring GEL title

Lindhurst earns playoff berth; Golf teams roll

The Marysville High girls soccer team pulled out a 1-0 upset victory over Golden Sierra at home on Monday, stealing the Golden Empire League crown from the Grizzlies.

The Indians (9-0-3) handed Golden Sierra (9-1-1) its first league loss which pulled Marysville ahead in winning percentage.

It was the third spring GEL title for Marysville after the swim and tennis team also captured banners.

Yesenia Godinez scored the lone goal in the game on an assist from Whitney Surface.

Alma Guerra, Kirstin Hodges, Kaitlin Mazzei and Alyssa Villa were credited for their defensive efforts by coach Chris Osborne.

The Indians host Victory Christian in the first round of playoffs next Tuesday.

The junior varsity team also beat Golden Sierra 1-0 to capture the GEL title.

Alondra Lomeli scored the goal and Sam Barker recorded four saves in goal for Marysville (8-0-1).

Lindhurst 3, Highlands 1

The Blazers had a feat of their own, capping their regular-season with a home victory over Highlands to earn the third and final playoff spot in the GEL.

Andrea Beck scored a pair of goals, while Yolanda Herrera added another for Lindhurst (7-3-2).

DeeDee Yang and Celia Martinez each added an assist, while Alex Cook and Esmeralda Raya were each credited with top defensive standouts by coach Jon Klingensmith.

Faith Chr. 1, Trinity Prep 0

Sarah Hall scored the Lions' only goal on an assist from Annie Reimers in the Sacramento Metropolitan Athletic League victory.

Defensively, Angela Lee, Martha De La Vega, Liz Andrus and Morgan Trimble played well. Joo Lee had four saves in the win for Faith Christian (11-6-2, 6-3). The Lions will play their final regular season game today.

GOLF

Maddalena moves on

Nick Maddalena shot an 80 and took second place individually for the Faith Christian golf team in the first round of the postseason at Stevenson Ranch in Turlock. The Lions placed seventh as a team.

Maddalena advances to 'The Masters' at the Reserve in Stockton on Monday.

Yuba City takes second

The Honkers shot a 446 to take second place behind Rodriguez High (444) at the Sac-Joaquin Division III finals at Chardonay Golf Course in Napa.

Taylor Brown led the team with an 86. John Holloway, Donnie Triphan and Joe Bauer each shot an 87 and Riley Horan finished with a 99 for Faith.

The team advances to 'The Masters' on Monday.

Barmore tops at Nevada Union

Bernell Barmore led the Honkers' boys varsity team at the Nevada Union Invitational.

He won the 110-meter hurdles in a time of 14.99 seconds. The junior took second in the triple jump with a distance of 41-feet, 10-inches and third place in the long jump (20-5).

Luis Zuniga was eighth in the 1600 (4:49.03) while Jo an Fernandez finished 10th (5:51.50).

For the varsity girls, Katie Haymore placed seventh in the triple jump (29-4.25).
