Local Roundup: Lady Lions serve up section crown
Section title No. 6 didn't come easy for the Live Oak High girls tennis team.
The Lions were down 4-2 to Orland, a team that beat the Lions twice this year and entered Wednesday's Northern Section Division II final with an 18-0 record.
But Live Oak swept the doubles competition and walked away with a 5-4 victory that had coach Greg Sanchez "flabbergasted," he said.
"That's the most amazing thing I've ever seen out here, Sanchez said.
Jennifer De Witt and Fermina Chavez (6-4, 6-3) and Kayla Morris and Luceo Topete (6-1, 6-1) and Jewel Wise and Crystal Rodriguez (6-4, 2-6, 6-1) all won their doubles matches to fuel the come-from-behind win.
Chavez (6-0, 6-0) and Topete (6-1, 6-1) won their singles matches for the Lions, who now move onto the section singles championships.
