Roundup: Honkers golf repeats as section champs
Gridley baseball edges Sutter; Moore tosses fourth straight no-hitter
The Yuba City High golf team repeated as Division III Sac-Joaquin Section champions on Monday after finishing first in the section tournament at the Sunset Whitney Golf Course and Country Club in Rocklin.
Yuba City, along with Casa Robles, will go on to the Section Masters Tournament held in Stockton on Monday.
Mason Welch of Del Campo finished first with a 75, while Yuba City's Justin Estrada took second with a 77 and the No. 5 golfer for the Honkers, Joe Bauer, carded a 79.
"Joe really came through for us today," said Yuba City golf coach Kent Meyers. "When he told us he shot a 79, we knew were OK."
Taylor Brown finished with a 85, Kameron Buzdas had an 87 and Donnie Triphan shot an 88.
BASEBALL
Gridley 10, Sutter 7
Keenan Emmitt went 3-for-4 with a double to help the Bulldogs to a Butte View League victory over Sutter at home.
Trevor Scott had three hits including a double and Anthony Parades finished 2-for-2 with a double for the Bulldogs.
Justin Herbert, Blake Ahlers and Ben Eisenbarth each had a pair of hits for Sutter.
Ahlers and Eisenbarth hit a double each and Herbert ripped a triple for the Huskies (14-9, 5-4).
SOFTBALL
Sutter 20, Gridley 0
Jessica Moore tossed her fourth consecutive no-hitter — this one a perfect game — to give the Huskies an easy BVLvictory over the host Bulldogs.
Moore struck out 14 in her five innings in the circle and went 4-for-4 at the plate. Jackie Sizemore also went 4-for-4, Courtney Gravel 4-for-5 and Jolene Graham was 3-for-4 to lead Sutter (29-0, 8-0).
Sami Prosser and Mariah McCarthy added two hits apiece for the Huskies, who look to wrap up the BVL title today against Wheatland.
SOCCER
Lindhurst 5, Highlands 1
Alex Cook and Andrea Beck each scored two goals in the Golden Empire League victory at home. Lucero Martinez scored the other goal.
Paola Rodriguez, New Xiong, Guadalupe Herrejon and Liliana Estrada played well defensively. Brenna Gates was solid in goal for the Blazers (5-7-3, 5-4-3) in their last game of the season.
The JV team won 3-0. Andria Anderson scored a pair of goals and Ocil Herrejon added a score to give the Blazers (4-4-3) a win at home in their final game of the season.
BOYS VOLLEYBALL
River Valley 3, Pioneer 0
The 25-23, 25-12, 25-22 sweep gave the Falcons the Central Valley Conference crown.
Harjeet Hansi had nine kills, Masson Hart had seven kills and Cameron Edelbute had six kills for the Falcons. Max Matthews had 25 assists and Yosa Figueroa had 13 digs.
TENNIS
Bonick wins in TCC
Yuba City's Eric Bonick beat his Pioneer opponent 7-6, 6-1 in the Tri-County Conference league singles playoffs Flight C match at Rancho Cortez.
Bonick was the lone winner from either Yuba City or River Valley.
The doubles playoffs are Wednesday at Rancho Cortez.
JV BASEBALL
East Nicolaus 7, Hamilton 2
Kenny Kolster tossed a no-hitter to lead the Spartans to a Mid-Valley League title.
He had 12 strikeouts and helped his own cause with a single, while Matt Taylor had two hits and Kyle Bolla, Aaron Cater and Cody Evans each had a single.
The Spartans finished the season 11-2.
JV SOFTBALL
Pioneer 15, Yuba City 10
Allexson Bevacqua went 2-for-4 with three RBIs, but the Honkers fell in the TCC matchup.
Kenna Thompson suffered the loss for Yuba City (15-9, 8-1).
