Prep Roundup: Smith pitches R.V. past Elk Grove
As far as wins go, this one was huge for the River Valley High softball team.
Courtney Smith struck out 13 batters without issuing a walk and the Falcons topped Division I powerhouse Elk Grove 3-0 on the road Wednesday.
Haley Shelton was 2-for-3 with two RBIs to lead the offense for the Falcons (4-1).
Live Oak 21, Esparto 2
Mercedes Duenas and Lyndsey Sizemore blasted back-to-back home runs in the Lions' blowout victory on the road.
Duenas finished with three hits and three RBIs, Courtney Laster went 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs, Ashley Howell was 2-for-2 and Sandra Alcantar ripped a double for the undefeated Lions (4-0).
BASEBALL
Live Oak 20, Esparto 2
Patrick Smith hit a grand slam while Markus Hackett, Miguel Alejo and Tony Montes each slapped three hits in Live Oak's rout on the road.
Ish Gardon hit a double and recorded three RBIs and Zac Walker tallied three RBIs for the Lions (1-3).
Marysville 7, San Juan 0
Derrick Brown fanned 11 batters in five innings, Peter Daley was 3-for-3 and Colby Givens went 2-for-3 with a triple as the Indians (5-1, 1-0) opened their Golden Empire League scheduel with a win over the Spartans.
Lincoln 7, Sutter 6, 9 innings
The Huskies out-hit the Fighting Zebras 10-8, but fell in nine innings on the road.
Ben Eisenbarth and Blake Ahlers each got two hits, Ray Miller finished with two RBIs while Brandon Coughlin and Eisenbarth each had one for Sutter (2-4-1).
GIRLS SOCCER
Lindhurst 5, Encina 1
Andrea Beck scored two goals and Celia Martinez had two assists and a goal of her own to lead the Blazers to a Golden Empire League victory.
Alex Cook and Dee Dee Yang each scored one goal for Lindhurst (1-1).
Yuba City 5, Woodland 0
Cassidy Fix and Jules Vahn scored two goals each and Lexi Giusti added another to lift the Honkers to a win over the Wolves in their Tri-County Conference opener.
Abigail Ortiz and Kayla Treanor both shined defensively in the win for the Honkers (5-2-1, 1-0).
Inderkum 1, River Valley 0
The Tigers scored the game's lone goal in the second half to hand the Falcons a loss in their TCC opener at home.
Rachel Coffman made four great saves in the first half and sweeper Chelsea Givens played well defensively for River Valley (5-2, 0-1).
Midfielder Diana Carillio collided with an Inderkum player in the second half and left the game in an ambulance. The loss of Carillio to the emergency room with a concussion took the wind out of River Valley's sails, coach Manny Cerda said.
Marysville 6, Highlands 0
Wendy Valencia scored two goals and tallied two assists, Nallely Ferreira had a goal and an assist and Mariah Surface, Alyssa Villa and Wendy Arechiga also scored in the win for the Indians (4-4-2, 2-0).
GOLF
Sutter wins BVL meet
The Huskies shot the lowest scores on the front and back nines to win their BVL match at Peach Tree Golf & Country Club.
Kevin Pauls finished with a 75 and Dayton Pierce shot a 78 to help Sutter to a score of 438 and the victory. Gridley placed third on the front nine and second on the back with a team score of 513. Kevin Creech had an 89 and Spence Payne shot a 90 for the Bulldogs.
Wheatland finished with a score of 539. Darrell Loftin had a 95.
Woodland 245, River Valley 249
Zach Cross shot a 42 and Lucas Vaughn had a 43, but the Falcons fell to the Wolves in their TCC match at Wild Wings Golf Course.
William Jow finished with a 44 for River Valley (3-3, 1-1).
Yuba City starts TCC 2-0
John Holloway shot a 39, Joe Bauer shot a 40 and Donnie Triphan finished with a 41 to lift the Honkers over Natomas at Peach Tree Golf and Country Club.
Bauer shot a 38 and Triphan had a 40 in the Honkers' TCC opener against Woodland at Flyers Country Club in Woodland.
BOYS TENNIS
Sutter 5, Wheatland 4
The Huskies took two of the three doubles matches to win their Butte View League opener over the Pirates.
Aaron Dodd (6-1, 6-1), Cameron Almeida (6-3, 6-4) and Sam Ruxton (6-2, 6-4) each won singles matches for Wheatland (2-2, 1-0), while the teams of Michael Manguia and Dodd (8-4) and Zach Miller and Ruxton (8-4) picked up wins in doubles.
Steffan Wagman (6-1, 6-0), Derek Zepp (2-6, 6-4, 6-3) and Tyler Zepp (6-2, 6-1) each won singles matches for Wheatland, while the team of Zepp and Zepp (8-5) won in doubles.
Yuba City 8, Woodland 1
Riley Secrist (6-1, 6-2), Jordon Friend (7-6[8-6], 7-6[8-4]), Trevor Kent (6-1, 6-1), Fanti De La Torre (6-1, 6-1), Eric Bonick (6-0, 6-0) and Sammi Musallam (6-3, 6-2) each won single matches as the Honkers opened their TCC slate with a win over the Wolves.
The teams of Jeff Funk and Darian Garcia (6-0, 6-2) and Abel Mora and Nathan Buckland (default) picked up doubles wins for Yuba City (9-0, 1-0).

AJ Paul took first in the shotput with a throw of 49 feet, 10 inches and Robert Williamson won the 110 meter hurdles in a time of 17.23 seconds for the Indians in the dual GEL meet.
Alex Rheherman won the 110 hurdles (19.3) and the 100 (13.02) and Trevor Knudsen won the pole vault (8-0) and the 300 hurdles (13.02) for the Indians JV team.

Stephanie Anderson won the 100 hurdles (18.95) and 300 hurdles (58.49) and Danielle Perrin took first in the discus (71-11) and shotput (30-11) for the Indians.

Nathan Ahlers went 4-for-4 with a triple and Blake Chissie had a double and an RBI for the Huskies (8-2). On Tuesday, Sutter topped Truckee 13-0. Quentin Hick went 2-for-4 while Lucas Cryer went 3-for-3 for the Huskies and helped lead them to victory.
