Prep Roundup: Wells, Perry lead Maxwell; Pierce blanks Mercy
It's that time of the year again and Maxwell High's Tyler Wells and Steven Perry are doing what they do best — dominating on the diamond.
The juniors combined on 14 strikeouts, no walks and allowed just two hits in a 14-1 rout on the road against University Prep on Wednesday.
Perry also went 2-for-4 with a double, a triple, three runs scored and three RBIs, while Wells went 3-for-4 with five RBIs.
The Panthers (4-1) also got run support from Dylan deWit, who went 4-for-5 with two RBIs and three runs scored, and James Bowen, who went 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Steven Powell also went 2-for-2 with two runs.
Pierce 10, Mercy 0
Jake Driver allowed one hit and struck out 13 batters to lead the Bears to a victory in their season opener. The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.
Ottie Harris clubbed a three-run homer and a double to drive in four runs, Raul Cardenas doubled and drove in two and Driver had two hits and drove in the game-winning run in the fifth for Pierce (1-0).
Durham 5, Sutter 4
Dylan Russell went 4-for-4 with a double and three runs scored, but the Huskies gave up four runs in the seventh inning in a nonleague loss to the Trojans at home.
Brannon Coughlin was 1-for-3 with an RBI-double and Morgan Osgood had an RBI single in the loss for Sutter (1-1).
GIRLS SOCCER
Marysville 1, Bear River 0
Mariah Surface scored the game's only goal off an assist from Wendy Arechiga to lift the Indians (2-4-1) to a nonleague win over the Bruins at home.
Samantha Baker had a great save as Marysville earned a 0-0 tie in the junior varsity match.
GOLF
River Valley tops Colusa
The Falcons cruised past Colusa at the Colusa Golf and Country Club by a score of 232-290.
Mario Mcheli and William Jow each shot a 44 to lead the Falcons, while Zach Cross (47), Lucas Vaughn (48), Jordan Davis (49) also contributed to the win.
Colusa was led by Chris Avila, who shot a 54.
TENNIS
Live Oak 7, River Valley 2
After topping Sutter 6-3 on Tuesday, the Live Oak High tennis team is rockin' and rollin,' starting the season off 3-0.
The Lions defeated the Fa cons on the road thanks to No. 3 singles player Andrew Avalos, who won 6-2, 5-7, 6-1 and Don-Don Bryant, who won 7-6, 6-4 in the No. 4s.
Satnam Sood won 6-3, 5-7, 6-2 at No. 5 and Edgar Yanez won 6-1, 6-3 at No. 6.
Pardeep Cheema, who fell to Darian Orozco 6-3, 6-0 at No. 1 singles, teamed up with Avalos to win 8-0 in the No. 1 doubles contest.
Eduardo Gonzalez and Bryant won 8-3 at No. 2 doubles, while Yanez and Dajot Singh won 8-1 at No. 3 doubles.
River Valley's Nat Kittiwongkorn won 6-2, 6-2 in the No. 2 singles match.
Sutter 6, Corning 3
Sutter picked up a road victory after taking four singles matches and two doubles.
Michael Munguia won 6-0, 6-1 at No. 2 singles, Giovanni Gallizia took the No. 3s 6-3, 6-1 and Cameron Almeida won 6-1, 6-1 at No. 5s. Sam Ruxton took No. 6s 6-1, 6-1.
In doubles, Almeida and Gallizia won 8-2, while Ruxton and Zach Miller won 8-3.
