Faith's Maddalena signs with Simpson University
Nick Maddalena took a welcome break from his 10 a.m. civics class at Faith Christian High on Tuesday.
Joined by family, friends and classmates, Maddalena spent a small portion of his morning celebrating his future after signing a partial golf scholarship with Simpson University.
"I've always wanted to play golf so it's pretty cool," said Maddalena. "My class was yelling and clapping, it was pretty fun."
During his time as a Lion, Maddalena has exceeded par for the course twice, winning the Sacramento Metropolitan Athletic Conference MVP.
Last season as a junior, he finished with an average "a shade under" 36, which is an improvement on his sophomore average of 37 and freshman average of 38, he said.
That skill comes from years of practice. Starting at 8-years-old, Maddalena would hit the links at River Oaks before moving over to Peach Tree at 12, where he has played ever since.
Starting next year he will be taking his game north to Simpson, an NAIA school based in Redding. For Maddalena, being a Red Hawk seemed like a good fit, he said.
"It's a really good school and a good atmosphere," he said.
