Live Oak's Pelfrey places 6th at state
Live Oak High senior Reid Pelfrey completed the best season by a wrestler in school history after placing sixth at CIF State Wrestling Championships in Bakersfield on Saturday.
"It was an amazing run," coach Michael Fredericks said. "Absolutely incredible."
Pelfrey, who competed in the 171-pound weight class, lost his first match at Rabobank Arena to Lemoore High's Jacob Pendleton, but rebounded to win his next six matches.
Three of his six wins were by decision, two were by major decision and one came by way of technical fall. Pelfrey eventually lost to Bakersfield High's Silas Nacita by technical fall in the consolation semifinals.
Pelfrey is the first medalist in Live Oak High history and only the second Lion ever to win a match at the state tournament.
Sutter's Justin Gildemeister (145) went 1-2 at the tournament, while teammates Alex Ryan (215) and Bryce Milani (heavyweight) both finished 0-2.
BASEBALL
Del Campo 2, Yuba City 1
The hits just didn't come at the right time for the Honkers, who dropped their first game of the season at home.
Yuba City tallied eight hits, but couldn't capitalize on situations like in the bottom of the sixth, when a runner on third with no outs didn't yield a run. It spoiled a solid outing from starting pitcher Tyler Olson and reliever Cody Kent, who went four innings and three innings, respectively.
Zach Oakley and Christian Divelbiss both went 2 for 4 and Blake Parks and Raul Lozano both hit doubles for Yuba City (1-1).
SOFTBALL
Colusa 3, Union Mine 3
Elliot Chr. 2, Colusa 1, 8 innings
Colusa 15, Forest Lake Chr. 0
The Redskins finished the Lindhurst Varsity Softball Tournament with a solid 3-1-1 record after splitting three games on Saturday.
Tiffany Friel struck out a combined 22 batters in the first two games of the day against Union Mine and Elliot Christian. In the tie against Union Mine all three runs were unearned.
Freshman Sophia Garcia earned the win against Forest Lake Christian.
On Friday, the Redskins opened their season with a 3-2 win over Marysville and a 9-1 victory over Florin.
JV BASEBALL
Sutter 10, Colusa 0
Sutter 14, Orland 1
The host Huskies powered themselves to a pair of victories at the Sutter JV Tournament.
Hayden Heilman was 2 for 2 with 4 RBI and Colton Minton surrendered no hits in a five-inning game with 10 strikeouts against the Redskins.
Against Orland, Minton was 2 for 3 with a triple for Sutter (5-0).
