Roundup: Faith spikers clinch share of crown
Comments 0 | Recommend 0The Faith Christian High volleyball team clinched a share of the Sacramento Metropolitan Athletic League title with a 25-17, 22-25, 25-15, 25-18 victory over visiting Buckingham Charter on Tuesday.
The Lions (19-1) finished 13-1 in SMAL play to split the league crown with defending champion Bradshaw Christian.
"We're hoping for a home match next Tuesday," said Faith coach Rene Martin, who added that the Yuba City school should host a first-round game when the Sac-Joaquin Section Div. V playoffs begin next week. "But, we'll see how it works out."
Kellye Hallmark had 11 kills, 15 service points and five aces and Cami Bicknell notched five kills, 15 service points and four aces to lead Faith Christian.
Morgan Trimble added six kills and three blocks, Lindsay Barnett had five kills and a block and Laura Thorpe logged a season-high 19 assists.
Sutter 3, Wheatland 0
Whitney Lee had 12 kills and three blocks to help the Huskies (39-1, 10-0) achieve a perfect Butte View League campaign with a 25-12, 25-14, 25-16 victory. Jessica Moore added 10 kills and a block and Megan Hilbers notched five kills. Setter Kayli Paulucci had 30 assists and Mariah Stout was strong behind the line for the Huskies with 16 service points.
The younger Huskies also achieved perfect seasons in league play. The junior varsity (28-1, 10-0) won 25-18, 25-14 and the freshman squad (23-5, 8-0) won 24-26, 25-23, 15-6.
Yuba City 3, River Valley 0
The Honkers made quick work of their cross-town rivals, 25-9, 25-14, 25-12. Hayley Thompson finished with three kills and three blocks, Mary McReynolds had seven digs and seven assists and April Goodman added nine digs for the Falcons (8-17, 2-8).
SOCCER
Faith Christian 9, Excelsior 0
The Crusaders (2-8-3, 1-8-2) ended their season with a trouncing of the short-handed Knights at Beckwourth Riverfront Park in Marysville.
Tim Joiner, Mikie Delozier and Leah Vaught each had two goals against Excelsior, who played 2 to 3 players short the entire game, Faith Christian coach Tony Lima said.
