Prep Roundup: Spencer, Falcons win thriller
Austin Spencer helped the Falcons walk-off, then walked off with the River City Classic's MVP honors.
The River Valley High baseball infielder went 3 for 3 with five RBIs, including a two-RBI single in the bottom of the seventh to lift the Falcons to a 6-5 win over River City.
It marked the first tournament win in school history, coach Billy Rollins said, and it came after a rousing comeback. The Falcons were down 5-1 entering the sixth inning.
Also helping the cause was freshman TJ Dove, who went 3 for 4 with two doubles and pitched the final three innings in relief to pick up the win.
Cameron Olson and Robert Hudson were named all-tournament selections for the Falcons (12-7).
Marysville 6, Red Bluff 0
Though he was making his first start since the Indians' season-opener, Cody Childers pitched like a veteran member of the rotation, coach Jay DeAlba said.
Childers scattered five hits over seven innings and the Indians started strong with a opening-round win in the Shasta Lake Bass Tournament.
Steven Arostegui was 3 for 3 with two RBIs and Chad Perry went 2 for 3 for the Indians (13-4).
Sutter 3, Whitney 1
With two outs and two runners on, Lucas Cryer sent a shot a up the middle to drive in two runs in the seventh inning to provide the game-winning runs for Sutter at the Shasta Lake Tournament.
The Huskies went scoreless for six innings before Phillip Robledo drove in Morgan Osgood on a groundout to spark the scoring.
Tyler Larsen went the distance on the mound. He struck out seven and allowed five hits for Sutter (12-2, 5-1), which will face Steven Perry and Maxwell today. Maxwell defeated Shasta 3-0 in the nightcap thanks to a two-hitter tossed by Tyler Wells.
Perry takes his four consecutive no-hitters into a showdown against Sutter. Perry needs one more no-hitter to set the state record.
"We're really excited to face them," said Sutter coach Mark Renfree.
GIRLS SOCCER
Marysville 2, Golden Sierra 0
Wendy Valencia scored both goals for the Indians, who bested their former Golden Empire League rival at home.
Sophomore Alondra Lomeli provided in an assist while playing in her first varsity game. Fellow 10th grader Haley Hudspeth also added an assist for the Indians (3-7-3).
The Indians' JV team tied the Grizzlies 1-1. Amber Eason scored Marysville's goal and Haley Adams had the assist for the Indians (1-9-1).

Folsom 10, River Valley 1
Dewey Maxham was 2 for 3 with an RBI, but the Falcons fell at the Franklin JV Baseball Tournament to take fourth place.
