Prep Roundup: River Valley wins golf match on forfeit

The golf version of the Mayor's Cup was a bit anticlimactic.

River Valley won by forfeit as only four players competed for Yuba City at Monday's Tri-County Conference match at Coyote Run Golf Course at Beale Air Force Base.

The Falcons shot 219 as a team, with William Jow leading the way by shooting a 40.

Steven Spatafore (42), Morgan Rimey (43) and Lucas Vaughn (45) rounded out the scoring for the Falcons.

Yuba City's Riley Horan and Gus Wiezorek both carded a 44.

River Valley's JV team shot 526 as a team and finished 8th in the league tournament.

Dan Bergum led the Falcons with a 96.

Marysville's Brown qualifies for Divisionals

Logan Brown shot a 79 at Monday's Golden Empire League Tournament at Wild Hawk Golf Club in Sacramento and qualified for the Division V tournament

Brown will head to Ione next Monday to play at Castle Oaks Golf Club.

The Indians placed third out of five teams on Monday, with a team score of 451.

GIRLS SOCCER

Capital Christian 2, Marysville 1

Alyssa Villa scored the Indians' lone goal at home.

Marysville (1-6-1, 3-8-3) will play two more games before the end of the regular season.

The Indians' JV game topped Capital Christian 4-3 thanks to two goals by Mayra Saucedo. Annie Wooten and Taylor Hodges each added a goal in the team's first league win. Wooten also had two assists.

Running with the best

Four top local athletes tested their skills against some of the best competitors across five sections in California on Saturday at the Sacramento Meet of Champions at Hughes Stadium on the campus of Sacramento City College.

River Valley High senior Kym Crosby placed fourth in the 400-meter run with a time of 58.63 seconds. Her teammate Swarnjit Boyal also took fourth, finishing the frosh-soph boys 1600-meter run with a time of 4 minutes, 38.69 seconds.

Yuba City senior Bernell Barmore competed in two events, the triple jump and 110-meter high hurdles.

Barmore leap of 44 feet, 2.25 inches was good enough for a third place finish, though his season-high mark is 44 feet, 9 inches. He clocked a 15.04 in the 110-meter high hurdles, placing 5th.

Sophomore Louis Mowers recorded a triple jump of 39-10.5 for a 12th place finish.

Falcon girls shine at Sheldon

Senior Fenny Descuatan, junior Carolyn McBride, freshman Harkiren Everest, and freshman Leanne Jarvis teamed up to win two relay events at Friday's Sheldon High Distance Carnival in Sacramento.

The four Falcons ran the distance medley for a combined time of 14:14.05, setting a new meet record. The same team of Falcons won the 4x800 meter relay in 11:02.92, setting yet another meet record.

Also medaling for R.V. were Andres Quijas, who placed third in the frosh-soph open 1600 (4:59.8) and the 4x800 relay team of David Hoskins, Sharukh Anwer, Jose Fernandez, and Amrit Boyal, who placed second with a 9:44.42.

Honkers run at Cougar Twilight

Yuba City High competed at El Dorado High's Cougar Twilight Invitational in Placerville last Friday.

For the varsity boys, Jo an Fernandez finished 5th in the 800 (2:08.99) and 7th in the 1600 (4:48.20). Jose Guzman took 7th in the 3200 (10:27.26).

Louis Mowers took 5th in the 300 hurdles (42.90) and 10th in the long jump (18-9).

In varsity girls, Niyia Sims finished 6th in both the 800 (2:41.78) and 1600 (5:47.61). In the frosh-soph boys division, Ralphie Lara was 2nd in the 300 hurdles (46.63).

Kate Aldridge took 4th in the frosh-soph girls' 1600 (6:28.66) and Savannah Soup placed 8th in the 800 (2:59.32).

Yuba hosts GVC Championships

The 49ers track & field team hosted the Golden Valley Conference Championships on Saturday, with the men's team taking home first in the 400 relay.

James Thurston, Jim Haley, Trevor Kinsey and Olumide Coker combined to win the event in 44.4 seconds. Coker also took third in the 100 (11.06) and 200 (22.84).

In the pole vault, Mario Gomez was second (12 feet, 6 inches) and Jacob Edwards was fourth (11-8).

Rafael Valdez was second in the hammer throw (145-10), Matt Horsfall second in the javelin (164-3) and Adam Paul second in the shot put (48-0). Jon Garcia was fifth in the javelin (158-6).

In all eight members of the team qualified for the NorCal trials in Modesto. The 49ers took fourth in the six-team event with Butte coming in first.

Shasta College took first for the women. Yuba's lone points scorer was Meredith Salazar, who took fourth in the 5000 (20:40.15) and bested her personal record by more than two minutes.
