Prep Roundup: Yuba City's Poukish claims conference tennis crown
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Yuba City High's Hannah Poukish defeated Pioneer's Estesania Tescano 7-5, 6-4 to capture the Tri-County Conference girls singles tennis championship Monday at Rancho Cortez in Yuba City.
With the victory, Poukish qualified for the Sac-Joaquin Section singles playoffs, which begin next week.
The Honkers also received strong performances from Angela Noland and Jasdeep Kang, who both advanced to the semifinals in Flight B, and from Rumyn Purewal, who lost in the Flight C semifinals.
River Valley's Morgan Riney lost to Pioneer's Charmaine Tabalis 4-6, 6-3, 10-8 in the Flight B finals, while fellow Falcon Anna Wy won the Flight C title with a 7-6 (7-3), 6-4 victory.
Yuba City will host the TCC super doubles and doubles tournament Wednesday at Rancho Cortez.
VOLLEYBALL
Yuba City 3, Pioneer 1
Katie Reiland tallied 14 kills and a solo block as the Honkers clinched at least a share of the Tri-County Conference title with a victory over the Patriots.
Taylor Thompson had 15 digs, 13 kills and two assisted blocks and Tori Thomas finished with 32 assists and four aces.
Jacqueline Van Ruiten had 26 digs and Brittany Bryant finished with six kills and two solo blocks for Yuba City (8-1), which will clinch the TCC title outright if Woodland beats Pioneer today.
SOCCER
Lindhurst 5, San Juan 1
Julio Chavez scored a pair of goals and Gabriel Vasquez had a goal and three assists to help the Blazers to a Golden Empire League victory.
Daniel Vela and Erik Machuca each scored a goal, while goalies Rafael Gutierrez and Miguel Rodriguez played well for Lindhurst (12-1-2, 10-1-1).
CROSS COUNTRY
Honkers finish second in TCC
The legs of Jose Guzman and Luis Zuniga helped propel the Honkers toward a second place finish in the Tri-County Conference championships at Willow Hills in Folsom on Thursday.
Guzman finished fourth (17 minutes, 53 seconds) and Zuniga came in seventh (18:16) on the 3.1-mile course.
Jo ann Fernandez Rodriguez ( 8th, 18:29), Abraham Barajas (11th,19:15), Patrick de los Santos (22nd, 20:36) and Zach Ca tenada (23rd, 20:51) also ran well for the varsity boys.
The Honker varsity girls also finished second. Holly McAlister placed fourth in 22:57 to lead the Honkers and Liliana Pinedo finished 8th in 24:45.
Jasmine Visla (11th, 26:32), Nicole de los Santos (13th, 27:40), Angelina Aceves (14th, 27:48) and Emily Wolverton (20th, 30:04) also had strong finishes for the Honkers.
Kevin Lewis represented the JV boys with a 24th place finish (15:39) on the 2.11-mile course. Kaitlynn Walker (18th, 19:51) and Harpreet Kaur (22nd, 21:23) ran well for the JV girls.
Ghafour named league MVP
Abdul Ghafour finished second in the TCC championships on Thursday with a time of 17:45. He was voted league MVP for his efforts on the season.
Nik Mehta (19th, 20:18), Hayden Sampley (21st, 20:35), Trevor Well (29th, 21:23) and Dylan Rutledge (35th, 23:02) also competed strongly for the varsity boys in their fourth place finish.
Kym Crosby led the varsity girls with her third place effort in 22:51, while Gurpreet Kaur (18th, 29:40) and Hershey Bansal (24th, 33:13) also ran well for the Falcons.
