Marysville's Brown hurls, hits team to win; Spartans' Taylor, Lions' Souza toss no-nos
Scotty Lehman just wasn't satisfied with simply getting on base.
The East Nicolaus High senior swiped three bases, hit a triple and scored two runs as the Spartans topped Pierce 8-5 on the road Thursday.
Aaron Cater was 2-for-4, Joey Sleva went 2-for-4 with a double and Tommy Sleva was 2-for-3 for the Spartans (4-0).
Joey Hernandez and Ottie Harris each went 2-for-4 for the Bears (1-1).
Colusa 9, Las Plumas 2
Red Bluff 10, Colusa 0
Hayden Meyers and Geoff MacPherson each had two hits to help the Redskins in the first game at the Colusa Tournament.
Benji Gil had five strikeouts in the win. Jacob Wright got the lone hit in the nightcap for Colusa (1-2). The tournament is scheduled to continue today, weather permitting.
Oroville 1, Wheatland 0
Las Plumas 6, Wheatland 5
The Pirates held the Tigers to a single hit in the first game but lost after walking in the winning run in game one of a doubleheader in Oroville.
Nolan West was 2-for-3 with a double for the Pirates (2-4-1).
Wheatland smacked 13 hits in the nightcap but the Thunderbirds still took the victory.
Dan Hernandez and Tyler Kreditor were 3-for-4 and Javier Lopez was 2-for-2 for the Pirates.
Marysville 4, Colfax 1
Derrick Brown pitched 51⁄3 innings with seven strikeouts and went 3-for-3 from the plate to lead the Indians to the victory at home.
Benny Beacham was 1-for-3 with a double for the Indians (2-2), who play Gridley on Monday.
SOFTBALL
East Nicolaus 11, Pierce 0
Ashley Taylor threw a no-hitter with 12 strikeouts in the Spartans road victory.
Ana White, Emily Toledo, Amanda Taylor and Erika Lehman each had a pair of hits. Candee Gardner smacked a triple and Alexis Smith finished with a double and two RBIs for the Spartans (2-0).
Live Oak 11, Biggs 0
Chelsey Souza pitched a no-hitter with five strikeouts to help the Lions to a victory.
Mercedez Duenas went 2-for-3 with two RBIs. Chelsey Souza, Courtney Laster and Lyndsey Sizemore each got a hit for Live Oak (2-0).
GOLF
Sutter rolls to win
Dayton Pierce shot a 40 and Cody Shogren finished with a 42 to help Sutter (2-0) to a victory at Peach Tree Golf & Country Club.
McClatchy 198, Yuba City 205
John Holloway and Gus Weizorek wach shot a 39 for the Honkers. Joe Bauer had a 41 and Donnie Triphan finished with a 42. Kameron Buzdas shot a 44 for Yuba City (1-2).
TENNIS
Marysville 9, Golden Sierra 0
No. 1 boys singles player Kong Xiong defeated his oponent 6-0, 6-2 in the home Golden Empire League victory. Cha Xiong also won (7-5, 6-2).
For the girls singles, Moriah Edwards (6-4, 6-3) and Colby Anderson (6-0, 6-1) won.
In boys doubles, the teams of Armando Montejano and Nick Kautz (10-4) and Terry Prince and Lennox Jacobson (10-1) won. For the girls, Kayla Elder and Julia Findley (10-1) got a victory for the Indians (4-0, 3-0).
Live Oak 7, Las Plumas 2
The Lions are 4-0 after the road win in Oroville.
Andrew Avalos (6-1,6-1), Donny Bryant (6-2, 6-1), Satnam Good (6-3, 6-1) and Edgar Yanez (6-0, 6-2) won their singles matches.
Pardeep Chima and Avalos (8-4), Eduardo Gonzales and Bryant (8-2) and Yanez and Paljot Singh (8-2) were victorious in doubles for Live Oak.
JV BASEBALL
Marysville 7, Colfax 6
Jake Thome hit a three-run triple to put the Indians back in the game. Jimmie Fernandez stole home and Marysville (4-1) won at home.
