Yuba City's Grahl takes another job

First year Yuba City High basketball coach Kurt Grahl, who led the Honkers within a game of reaching Arco Arena in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III playoffs last season, has departed the school and will be an assistant coach at Cal State Monterey Bay, he said Thursday.

The reason for the coach not returning to head the brown and gold Honkers — pink. Grahl, a math instructor at Yuba City High, was one of many teachers given layoff notices.

That prompted him to search for an open teaching position. He found work at Salinas High and hit it off with Otters' coach Rob Bishop after visiting CSUMB's athletic office.

Grahl eventually was one of the teachers who was retained by the district, but the ball was already in motion toward making the move to Monterey, an opportunity he is "definitely excited" to have, he said.

Last season the Honkers went 24-4 and were 12-0 in league en route to winning the Tri-County Conference title.
