Prep Roundup: Lady Lions claim tourney title
Tournament most valuable player Morgan Trimble tallied 30 kills and four blocks to help lead the Faith Christian High volleyball team to the Champion Christian Tournament title in Chico on Saturday.
The Lions dropped all three of their games in round robin play before rebounding with a pair of victories to win the championship.
Faith Christian beat Los Molinos 19-25, 25-18, 15-12 in the semifinals before rallying back again to beat host Champion Christian 13-25, 26-24, 15-13 in the finals.
All-tournament selection Justine Eckdawy had 28 kills on the afternoon, while Sarah Hall finished with 30 service points to go with her 12 aces. Lindsay Barnett added 21 kills as well for the Lions (10-9).
CROSS COUNTRY
Fernandez paces Yuba City
The Yuba City High cross country teams traveled to the Willow Hills Reservoir course at Folsom High to compete in the Bronco Cross Country Invite over the weekend.
In the varsity boys division, the Honkers were led by Jo an Fernandez, who placed 15th out of 215 runners with a time of 17 minutes, 33 seconds on the 3.11-mile course.
The invitational event hosted over 100 schools from the northern and central part of the state as well as Nevada.
Jose Guzman took 23rd (17:56) and Greg Geraldo was 127th (20:49).
Niyia Sims led the varsity girls team and placed 31st (22:24) out of 145 runners. Holly McAlister wasn't far behind, placing 42nd (22:53). Liliana Pinedo finished 103rd (26:56) and Angelina Aceves took 119th (30:06).
Kelsey Mincer placed 11th (16:12) on the 2.11-mile course in the frosh-soph girls division.
Matt Bailey finished 14th (12:53) for the frosh-soph boys division. Tanner McAlister, Marcos Gonzales and Elliot Sanchez also competed on the course for Yuba City.
