Prep Roundup: Wheatland rolls past L.P.; Pierce upends Trinity

Derick Seward tallied 174 yards rushing and scored four touchdowns including a 56-yard run to lead the Wheatland High football team to a 40-6 home victory over Las Plumas to remain undefeated in Butte View League play.

Lacarlis Moore scored a pair of 10-yard touchdown runs and Zach Downing had two solo sacks and assisted on one for the Pirates (7-1, 3-0), who face Gridley next week.

Pierce 18, Trinity 13

Rudy Godinez tossed a 15-yard touchdown pass to Ricky Herrera with three minutes left to help the Bears to a Sacramento Valley League upset of the undefeated Trojans.

Godinez also had two interceptions and 87 yards on 22 carries. Kyle Duncan picked off a 83-yard pass and returned it for a touchdown.

Michael Villanueva had a 19-yard touchdown run. Armando Colsa and Duncan each tallied 10 tackles each for the Bears (3-1).

Maxwell 52, University Prep 0

Nathan Azevedo ran in a 55-yard punt return and scored on another run to help the Panthers to an Evergreen League-opening blowout victory.

Steven Perry and Tyler Wells each scored two touchdowns and James Bowen scored one for Maxwell (6-3, 1-0).

Lincoln 35, Marysville 0

Facing off against one of the top teams in the Sacramento Valley, the Indians fell in a non-league contest on the road.

"This was the hardest the kids have played all year in any game," said Marysville coach Cullen Meyer.

He credited AJ Paul and Mike Barabin in the non-league loss.

The Indians fall to 3-4 overall.

SOCCER

Faith Christian 5, New Life Chr. 1

Zach Barnett scored two goals to lead the Lions to a playoff-clinching victory over New Life Christian.

The Lions (11-7-1, 8-1-1) also got goals from Kyle Baucom, Alex Lopez and Sam Ithurburn.

Spencer Iskikian had two assists, while Josh Khela, Skylar Ripley and Lopez each recorded one.

Josh Hill had eight saves for Faith Christian.

Mikie DeLozier had the lone goal for New Life Christian (3-8-1, 3-6). Ricky Laughlin had the assist, while Tim Joiner was credited with a solid defense.

TENNIS

Live Oak dominates at SVL tournament

The Live Oak High girls tennis program has done something that coach Greg Sanchez has never seen done while he has been there.

Heading into the semifinals, four of the six slots for singles are filled with Lions. Three of the four doubles slots are also filled with Live Oak players.

Jennifer DeWitt, Alora Sutcliffe, Melissa Anderson and Fermina Chavez went 3-0 on the first day at the SVL tournament. Kayla Morris and Lucero Topete went 2-1 and are competing for fifth place.

In doubles, the teams of Daniela Dumitras and De Witt, Sutcliffe and Chavez, and Anderson and Topete all went 3-0.

Play continues today starting at 9 a.m. at the Yuba City Racquet Club at the Rancho Cortez building

VOLLEYBALL

Valley Chr. 3, Faith Chr. 1

Danielle Best had eight digs and three kills, but it wasn't enough for a banged up Faith Christian team.

With two of their starters out, the Lions battled in a 25-12, 25-20, 23-25, 25-22 loss.

Gabi Hinz had 12 assists and four blocks for the Lions (13-3, 8-3), while teammate Morgan Trimble had nine kills and four blocks and Justine Ekdawy had four kills and two blocks.

Faith Christian's junior varsity team lost 25-19, 25-17. Lauren Heinrich had 15 service points including six aces and two kills.

Meagan Maher had 10 kills and Mary Murphy finished with five for the Lions (3-8, 2-7).

JV FOOTBALL

Lindhurst 32, San Juan 8

Diego Villasenor rushed for 179 yards and four touchdowns, while Christian George added another and Lindhurst cruised past San Juan.

Miguel French had two catches for 50 yards for the Blazers (2-5, 1-2).
