Colusa shatters Biggs' spirit

Wolverines' defense gives way in second half

A defense can stay on a cold, wet field for so long before it runs out of juice.

An inconsistent offense, poor punting and a dominating Colusa defense led to a 34-0 Colusa victory in Biggs on Friday night.

And even though Biggs (2-7) trailed just 7-0 with less than two minutes remaining in the third quarter, something had to give — namely, the Wolverines defense.

Colusa's Carlos Gutierrez, Darren Smith and Vincente Gutierrez combined for more than 300 yards and four touchdowns on the ground — nearly 200 of those yards and all four touchdowns came in the second half.

An early battle for field position went back and forth, but the Wolverines' punt team was their own demise.

On their own 20-yard line, the Wolverines got off a 2-yard punt, which help set up Colusa's first score midway through the second quarter.

It took four runs plays, one of which was an off tackle burst by Smith, and due to his strong second effort, put the Redskins (6-3) on the goal line. Quarterback Jeremy Hernandez punched it in.

With less than two minutes to go in the third, Carlos Gutierrez recorded his first of three scores on the evening with a 5-yard power run inbetween the tackles. The senior standout finished with a 133 yards, and that was without playing in the first quarter.

Smith finished with 104 yards on 13 carries, one of which was a 20-yard touchdown scamper down the sidelines. The senior stretched out to get the ball within the cone in the end zone before being pushed out of bounds to lift Colusa 21-0 just seconds into the fourth quarter — the score was set up following a 7-yard duck of a punt sailed out of bounds.

First play from scrimmage, Smith scored.

Another three-and-out for Biggs, and two minutes later, Colusa took advantage.

Smith scampered 17 yards on Colusa's ensuing possession from scrimmage, then Carlos Gutierrez ripped off a 35-yard touchdown right up the middle.

After another quick offensive possession by the Wolverines, Carlos Gutierrez bulldozed his way to a 32 yards gain before scoring from 8 yards out two plays later.

Colusa's defense, led by Benji Gil, was just too much for a finesse Biggs offense.

The Wolverines managed to muster up only 92 yards of offense on the evening.

Gil recorded five tackles for losses, while Dylan Boggs recorded two tackles for losses and two sacks and Dylan McPherson and Luis Benitez also got in on tackles for losses.

The bright side for Biggs — a solid defensive performance from Emilio Marquez, Kevin Hicks, Gunner McDaniel, David Diaz and Jake Haury, who all combined on six tackles for losses and three sacks.
