YUBA ROUNDUP: 49er men take BVC tourney opener

After College of Alameda put up 78 points against the Yuba College men's basketball team on Jan. 18, coach Doug Cornelius knew the Cougars would enter the first round of the Bay Valley Conference tournament confident.

And why wouldn't they? No other team in the BVC has put up that many points on Yuba all season.

Cornelius drove the point home at Monday's practice — the defense has to get better.

The 49ers defeated the Cougars 102-86 on Tuesday night, though surrendering 86 points to the tournament's lowest seed didn't sit well with the 49ers' head coach.

"That is just uncalled for," Cornelius said. "We have to get better in the next 24 hours."

Yuba (27-3) hosts Merritt College at 7 p.m. in tonight's second-round matchup. The Niners defeated Merritt at home on Jan. 27, 93-69.

In Tuesday's win, Cody Kale led the 49ers with 21 points, while Spencer Butterfield and Anthony Romero each scored 18. Butterfield also had nine boards.

De'Aundray Robinson scored 12 and Anto Olah added 10 for the 49ers.

WOMEN'S BASKETBALL

Mendocino 65, Yuba 49

The Lady 49ers saw their season come to an end with a loss at Mendocino in the opening round of the BVC Tournament.

Ebonie Walker-Brown capped a stellar two-year career at Yuba with a team-high 18 points to go with 23 rebounds. She ended the season among the top 10 in the state in rebounding with an average of 14 per game.

Chloe Pereiro added 16 points for the Niners, who finished the year with a 4-20 record.

BASEBALL

Yuba 9, American River 5

The 49ers bounced back from a lopsided loss to Delta on Saturday with a nonconference victory over the Beavers in Sacramento.

Marysville High product Davis Walker knocked in two runs for Yuba and finished his day 3 for 3.

Tim Catalano was 2 for 4 with three RBIs and Lindhurst grad AZ Sutton drove in a pair of runs, doubled and was 2 for 5.

Yuba City grad Tyler Updike doubled and scored twice, while Chris Stocker tripled and scored three times.

Ivan Lamas (River Valley) picked up the win on the mound, pitching six complete innings with four strikeouts.

Yuba (3-3) hosts Feather River College on Friday.

SOFTBALL

Diablo Valley 5, Yuba 3

Hartnell 2, Yuba 1

The 49ers slipped to 4-5 on the year after dropping both games of a doubleheader in Walnut Creek.

Lindhurst High grad Dylanne Brown went 2 for 4 and scored two runs and River Valley alum Rachel Quinn was 2 for 4 with an RBI and a run scored to lead Yuba in the opener. A pair of errors and a Diablo Valley grand slam in the sixth inning proved to be the Niners' undoing in that game.

Yuba recorded just two hits in the nightcap and fell to Hartnell. Lindhurst graduate Morgan Thome was 1 for 3 with a double and former Live Oak standout Lyndsey Odom-Sizemore was 1 for 4 with a run scored to provide the offense.

The 49ers will play at Santa Rosa on Thursday.
