PREP WRESTLING: Holiday in Hawaii for Husky grapplers

The Sutter High wrestling team celebrated Christmas a little early as the Huskies participated in the Hawaii Wrestling Officials Association 2012 Scholarship Tournament, which concluded on Dec. 22.

Sutter was one of two teams from the mainland to compete in the tournament, which was held at Leilehua High on the island of Oahu, a few miles northwest of Honolulu in Wahiawa.

Sutter placed third in the 38-team field with a team score of 142.

Leading the charge for the Huskies was senior heavyweight Reid Melani, who took home the 285-pound championship with a 4-3 win by decision in the title bout.

Melani went undefeated and recorded two pinfalls en route to his first-place finish.

Alex Lopez, a 135-pound sophomore, placed second in his weight bracket. Lopez four straight matches before being pinned in the championship.

Hunter Minton made a nice run in the 140-pound division. Minton lost in the semifinals, but recovered nicely in the consolation bracket with a 5-4 victory in the third-place match.

A couple of Husky grapplers represented well in the 215-pound weight class as Mike Thompson and Trevor Holt placed fourth and fifth, respectively.

Thompson had two pinfall wins and one by decision before losing by pin in the semis. He earned a spot in the third place match and eventually took fourth. Holt won by a 4-2 decision in the fifth place match.

Alex Ingram (160) ended his tournament run with a 3-2 record and took home a hard-fought 3-2 decision in the fifth-place bout.

Chase Gildea rounded out Sutter's top performers with a sixth-place finished in the 189-pound division.

Other Huskies to record victories in the tournament, but did not place, were Jayce Heryford (114), Micah Cervantes (135), Zach Bell-Matthews (145), Chase Miles (152), Riley Vickner (171) and Aiden Lang (189).
