LOCAL SPOTLIGHT: Y.C.'s Wallace receives honor
Former Yuba City High Honker Josh Wallace is making the most of his college experience.
Fresh off his first season on the Southern Virginia University football team, Wallace made the transition to wrestling season quickly, earning United States Collegiate Athletic Association Player of the Week honors.
Wallace, a 2011 graduate, won the 235-pound bracket at the Turkey Bowl Classic last weekend. It was his first match of the season, just two weeks removed from football season when he played linebacker.
At the Turkey Bowl Classic, Wallace went 2-0, winning his first match by decision. In the championship bout, Wallace pinned his opponent in 43 seconds.
Wallace isn't the only former Honker on the SVU squad.
Sophomore Jeremy Atkinson took the 157-pound title at the Turkey Bowl.
Locals earn all-conference accolades
The Western Athletic Conference announced its all-conference team this week and Olivehurst's Isaiah Frey was a first-team selection.
A 6-foot, 190-pound senior, Frey was a shutdown cornerback for the Nevada Wolf Pack for four seasons. He was a second-team pick last year.
Frey, who prepped at Jesuit High in Carmichael, led the WAC in pass break-ups (1.50 per game) and he was second in interceptions with five.
He will conclude his collegiate career on Christmas Eve at the Sheraton Hawaii Bowl in Honolulu against Conference-USA champion Southern Miss.
In volleyball, former Sutter High standout Torrey Hulsey was a first-team All-Cascade Collegiate Conference for the College of Idaho.
A junior middle blocker, Hulsey helped lead the Lady Yotes to the quarterfinals of the NAIA National Championships and a No. 7 national ranking.
It was the best finish in program history.
Hulsey finished second in the CCC with a .346 hitting percentage and third with her 1.07 blocks per game average. Her 128 total blocks led the CCC.
Sacramento State senior Eryn Kirby, a Yuba City High product, was a second team All-Big Sky Conference pick for the Hornets.
Kirby led the Hornets in kills per set (3.11) and points per set (3.62) while recording 16 double-doubles.
Her 1,132 career kills is the 13th best mark in school history.
