PREP ROUNDUP: River Valley winning streak ends at nine
Gridley girls top Sutter
The River Valley High boys basketball team came back down to earth on Thursday night.
After rattling off a program-record nine straight wins, the Falcons suffered their first loss in over a month with a 79-70 setback at Natomas.
The Nighthawks handed River Valley their first loss in the Tri-County Conference, despite a big night from senior Manik Thiara, who scored 24 points.
The Falcons (14-4, 2-1) are now in a tie with Natomas and Inderkum for second place in the TCC behind Yuba City.
R.V. will host the Honkers next Friday to complete the first cycle of conference play. Before that, Inderkum will visit Falcon Gymnasium on Tuesday night.
Jake Phillips scored 17 against the Nighthawks, Stuart Bradley added 13 and Anthony Boykin scored 11 points with seven rebounds.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Gridley 57, Sutter 53
Ashley Gallion scored a team-high 14 points and the Bulldogs raced past the Huskies in a Butte View League contest at Farmer's Hall in Gridley.
Madison Mardesich added 12 points for the Bulldogs (3-15, 1-1)
Erika Larsen scored 23 points and pulled down 22 rebounds and Destiny Stevenson finished with 18 points in the loss for Sutter (7-11, 1-1).
GIRLS SOCCER
Sutter 3, Orland 3
Erika Linch and Kelsey Graham had a goal and an assist each and the Huskies avoided a near upset by earning a draw with the Trojans in a BVL match at home.
The last time the Huskies dropped a BVL contest was a 2-1 loss to Orland on Feb. 12, 2004.
Jayden Garcia added a goal and Jenna Lewis had an assist for Sutter (12-3-1, 5-0-1).
Live Oak 2, Esparto 0
Clarissa Herrera notched a goal and an assist and Bibiana Alejo added a goal as well to lift the Lady Lions to a nonleague win over the Spartans at home.
Alma Gutierrez recorded the other assist for Live Oak (5-3).
Colusa 2, Willows 0
Sami Espindola scored a pair of goals to help lift the RedHawks to a Sacramento Valley League-II win over the Honkers in Willows.
Yajaira Cruz and Sandra MacPherson had an assist each in the win for Colusa (5-2, 4-1).
BOYS SOCCER
Orland 5, Sutter 0
The Huskies fell behind 2-0 at halftime and were shut out in a BVL match at home.
Coach Gurdeep Bhattal credited Franklin Tarke and Ricardo Navarro for strong play defensively, Jeff Mackensen for playing well in goal and Weston Childers and Colin Olmstead for their efforts at midfield for Sutter (1-6-2, 4-2-1).
WRESTLING
Lindhurst 51, Encina 25
The Blazers picked up six wins by way of pin and two by way of forfeit to beat the Bulldogs in a nonleague meet.
Winning by pin for Lindhurst was Tongsia Thanadab (108 pounds), Rigo Cole (122), Jesus Yanez (134), Tommy Benge (152), Richard Yanez (183) and Brandon Mason (195).
Armante Gonzalez (138) also won by decision for the Blazers, who improved to 12-4 overall with the victory.
JV BOYS BASKETBALL
River Valley 74, Natomas 56
TJ Dove scored 30 points and came down with 10 rebounds and Shawn Singh recorded a double-double as well with 26 points and 10 boards to lead the Falcons to a TCC win over the Nighthawks in Sacramento.
Gurtej Singh finished with six points and four rebounds for River Valley, which improved to 13-5 overall and 3-0 in the TCC with the victory.
Yuba City 89, Pioneer 42
Travis Blas scored 18 points and handed out five assists to help propel the Honkers past the Patriots in a TCC game at home.
Gagan Nijjar recorded a double-double with 14 points and 10 rebounds and Austin Thompson added 12 points for Yuba City (11-9, 3-0).
FROSH BOYS BASKETBALL
Yuba City 67, Pioneer 48
John Horn scored a game-high 24 points and the Honkers opened their TCC slate with a win over the Patriots at home.
Parker Lowe added 14 points and Angel Hernandez chipped in 13 in the win for Yuba City (6-11, 1-0).
