Yuba track & field opens at Shasta
The Yuba College track and field team is back in action, and beefed up from last year's smaller squad.
"We have 28 kids who consistently come out, and about nine others," said Yuba coach Bob Miller. "So we have more athletes out here."
Olumide Coker, a Yuba City High grad, opened up things for the team at Shasta College on Monday with two second-place finishes in the 100 and 200 sprints.
David Swiderski took third in pole vault, Kodie Vega finished third in the 400 hurdles and Marysville High grad A.J. Paul, who is battling an injury, still managed to finish fifth in the shot put. Zach Zapata took sixth in the hammer for the men's team.
On the women's side, Amanda Horne took second in the 200 and 400 hurdles, while Courtney Swiderski finished sixth in the long jump.
But it was the volleyball players and first-time participants in track and field who led the way.
Brittany Keys, a Wheatland High grad, finished fourth in the javelin, fifth in the shot put and discus and sixth in the hammer.
Taylor Thompson, a Yuba City High grad, took third in the javelin, sixth in discus and seventh in the hammer and shot put.
