LOCAL NOTEBOOK: Lions All-Star football South team announced
The rosters for the 35th annual Lions All-Star Football Game were announced recently and 14 Mid-Valley players were selected to play for the South team.
Local high school seniors selected to the South squad are: Biggs QB/WR Michael Torres, East Nicolaus WR Tommy Sleva, Gridley WR/DB Kevin Mattos, Lindhurst FB/MLB Tyler Vaitautolu, Live Oak OT/DE Alex Martinez, Marysville C/DL Dominic LaBarbara, Maxwell RB/LB Brett Cabral, Pierce TE/DE Andrew Diaz, River Valley TE/DE Anthony Boykin, Sutter DB Masen Lopez and RB Elijah Smith, Wheatland RB/LB Tyler Larcom, Williams FB/LB Diego Rivera and Yuba City OL/DL Christian Diaz.
The annual contest pits the best graduating seniors in Northern California against each other. Chico coach Jason Alvistur will lead the South team, while Orland's Mike McDonald will coach the North.
The North has won the last three contests, including a 28-14 victory at Harrison Stadium in Oroville last year. The North also holds a 19-14-1 lead all-time in the series.
This year's game will be played on July 28 at Bob Reid Stadium in Anderson.
Yuba City native Romero signs with Montana Western
Former River Valley High standout Francisco Romero signed a national letter of intent with the University of Montana Western last week to play football.
Romero was an Appeal-Democrat All-Area first-teamer after his senior season in 2009 and was also selected to the Lions All-Star South team. He was also honored in 2008 as an A-D All-Area second team selection.
Romero has started for Yuba College on the offensive line over the past two seasons, including last year's team that defeated Monterey Penisula 28-27 in the Sierra Central Credit Union Bowl.
Montana Western, an NAIA school and member of the Frontier Conference, finished 2-9 last season.
Gridley's Donnahoe headed to Davis
After an impressive senior season at Gridley, Ryan Donnahoe, a field athlete who throws discus and shot put, signed a national letter of intent with UC Davis on Tuesday.
Donnahoe broke the school record in shot put with a heave of 58-feet, 61⁄2-inches, and also set the Northern Section record with the same throw.
