PREP ROUNDUP: Bulldogs fight off Huskies
Blazers, Indians, Lions also win
Emery Haddy scored a team-high 12 points and the Gridley High boys basketball team outscored the Huskies 18-7 in the fourth quarter to earn a 45-32 Butte View League victory in Sutter on Friday night .
"It was a pretty back-and-forth game. It was a defensive battle and it was physical," Gridley coach Nathan Link said. "It was close throughout. We were able to make some free throws down the stretch and close it out late in the fourth quarter."
Kevin Mattos scored eight points and Ryker Canada and Mike Fenn dropped in seven points each for the Bulldogs, who upped their mark to 8-10 overall and 1-1 in the BVL with the victory.
Coach Bernie DiDario credited guards Elijah Smith and Trent Little for their strong play in the backcourt for Sutter (7-11,1-1).
Lindhurst 77, West Campus 53
James Trujillo led four Lindhurst players in double figures with a 21-point, four-steal effort and the Blazers breezed past West Campus in a Golden Empire League contest at home.
Erick Tallman scored 13 points, Jarrade Davis added 12 and Cedrick Thomas finished with 10 points, eight assists and three blocks in the win for the Blazers (14-5, 2-0).
Faith Christian 78, Sacramento Country Day 36
Senior Blake Lavin had another big night with 28 points, 14 rebounds and seven assists and the Lions cruised past Sacramento Country Day in a Sacramento Metropolitan Athletic League game on the road.
Micah Atkins added 24 points and nine rebounds and Jesse Clark finished with nine points and seven boards for Faith Christian (16-2, 5-0), which will travel to play Valley Christian on Tuesday in a battle for first place.
Marysville 51, Mesa Verde 39
Brandon Graves had a monster game against Mesa Verde in Citrus Heights to help the Indians improve to 7-10 overall and 1-1 in the GEL.
Graves scored 21 points, pulled down 15 rebounds and recorded five blocks, Cole Hannum had 11 points and 13 rebounds and Chu Lor scored eight points and dished out five assists in the victory.
New Life Christian 49, Freedom Christian 39
Jordan Sullivan scored 15 points to lead the Crusaders past Freedom Christian in a Northern Pacific Athletic Conference game in Roseville.
With the win, New Life improves 8-8 overall and 3-0 in league.
East Nicolaus 60, Williams 39
Drew Orr and Riley Shill each scored 15 points to lead the Spartans past the Yellowjackets in a Mid-Valley League game in Williams.
With the win, East Nicolaus improves to 8-11 overall and 2-1 in league play.
Pierce 37, Durham 35
Andy Corona scored 19 points and pulled down 12 rebounds to help power the Bears past Durham in a Sacramento Valley League game in Arbuckle.
Oscar Dorantes chipped in 11 points with five rebounds for Pierce (10-4, 3-0).
Winters 49, Wheatland 42
Jackson Hopking scored a team-high 15 points, but the Pirates came up short in a BVL loss to the Warriors at home.
Galen Sharp scored seven points and Nolan West pulled down seven rebounds in the loss for Wheatland (4-15, 0-2).
GIRLS BASKETBALL
River Valley 56, Natomas 45
Taylor Massengale and Aleqse Hawkins each recorded double-doubles to lead the Falcons to a Tri-County Conference victory over the Nighthawks at Falcon Gymnasium.
Massengale finished with 11 points and 21 rebounds and Hawkins added 12 points and 10 boards for River Valley, which pulled down 55 rebounds as a team to roll to its seventh straight win.
Jacky Tanner rounded out the scoring with 10 points for the Falcons (16-4, 3-0).
Yuba City 51, Pioneer 27
Brittany White scored 18 points, Money Kaur recorded 11 and the Lady Honkers improved to 7-12 overall and 1-2 in the TCC with a victory over the Patriots in Woodland.
Destiny Fleenor chipped in eight points for Yuba City.
Marysville 57, Mesa Verde 36
Holly Tarr scored 13 points to go with 18 rebounds to help lead the Lady Indians past Mesa Verde in a GEL contest in Citrus Heights.
Bayshta Aguila and Rosa Gonzalez each chipped in 12 and Marysville improved to 11-7 overall and 1-1 in the GEL.
East Nicolaus 65, Williams 28
Mikayla Rolufs scored all of her team-high 15 points in the first quarter and the Spartans rolled past the Yellowjackets in a MVL contest in Williams.
Katie Michel added 14 points and Brooke Essary scored 10 points in the win for East Nicolaus (15-3, 2-1).
Willows 65, Colusa 42
Emily Mobley scored 12 points and came down with eight rebounds and Katie Mobley had 10 points and six rebounds, but the RedHawks dropped their SVL contest to the Honkers in Willows.
Mattie Myers chipped in with six points and two assists and Cheyenne Rogers had six points and six rebounds in the loss for Colusa (14-3, 2-1).
New Life 64, Freedom 22
Leanna Whiteley scored 25 points and swiped eight steals and Elicia Villafranco recorded 18 points and 11 rebounds to lead the Crusaders past Freedom Christian in a NPAC victory in Roseville.
With the win, New Life improves to 7-9 overall and 2-1 in NPAC play.
JV BOYS BASKETBALL
Wheatland 56, Winters 53
Jordan Samson scored 18 points, Taylor Balogi added 15 and Justin Hawkins had 13 to help power the Pirates (9-7, 1-1) past Winters in a BVL game at home.
Sutter 61, Gridley 31
Seth Landers scored 23 points and Brandon Chambers tallied 17 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Huskies (9-9, 2-0) to a BVL win over the Bulldogs at home.
JV GIRLS BASKETBALL
River Valley 46, Natomas 16
Harkiren Everest scored 10 points and Alexa Ornelas and Sarah Wirrig added eight points each to help lift the Falcons (14-5, 3-0) to a TCC win over Natomas at home.
Marysville 38, Mesa Verde 28
Kennedy Baker dropped in 12 points and Kaoyee Lor scored nine to power the Indians (5-8, 2-0) to a GEL win over the Mavericks in Citrus Heights.
Yuba City 30, Pioneer 27
Hannah Heitman scored 11 points, Jostyn Bebout added 10 and the Lady Honkers topped Pioneer in a TCC contest on the road.
With the victory, Yuba City improves to 10-9 and 2-1.
