LOCAL ROUNDUP: Sutter girls close BVL with win
Live Oak, Colusa girls clinch SVL titles
Erika Linch scored a pair of goals, Taylor Heryford added another and the Sutter High girls soccer team wrapped up its regular season slate with a 3-2 Butte View League victory at Winters on Thursday afternoon.
Martina Damboriena had two assists, Jayden Garcia had one, Devan Reische recorded five saves in goal and Jenna Lewis had a strong game defensively, coach Jeff Stanhope said.
The Huskies ended their regular season 17-3-1 overall and 11-0-1 in the BVL. Sutter's postseason fate will be determined when the Northern Section playoff brackets are released on Saturday.
Live Oak 1, Durham 0
Clarissa Herrera scored the Lions' lone goal to clinch the Sacramento Valley League-I title in Durham.
The Lions (9-4, 5-1) will find out their playoff seed on Saturday.
Colusa 2, Hamilton 0
Sandra MacPherson and Stephanie Munguia scored a goal each and the RedHawks clinched the SVL-II title with a victory over the Braves in Hamilton City in their regular season finale.
Kaytlin Lorenzini recorded an assist for Colusa (9-3-1, 5-1), which also sewed up the No. 1 seed in the Division III playoffs with the win.
Gridley 2, Las Plumas 0
Brenda Lozano and Joanna Teal scored a goal each and the Bulldogs concluded their regular season with a BVL win in Oroville.
Sonia Jada notched 12 saves to record the shutout for Gridley (7-10-1, 5-7-1).
BOYS SOCCER
Live Oak 2, Durham 0
Sal Vargas scored two goals off assists from Pedro Valencia and the Lions completed their regular season with a SVL-I victory at Durham.
Goalie Joel Cibrian recorded the shutout and Ismael Esparza, Rene Martinez and Abraham Cuevas were credited with strong defensive efforts by coach Mike Owen.
The Lions completed the regular season 16-2-2 overall and 6-2 in SVL-I play. They will host a first-round playoff game on Thursday.
Hamilton 6, Colusa 1
The RedHawks only trailed 2-0 at halftime, but gave up four more goals in the second half to drop the SVL-II match in Hamilton City.
Adrian Garcia assisted Felipe Granados on Colusa's (1-12-1, 0-7-1) only goal of the match in the second half.
Coach Dan Kiely said Manuel Garcia, Moises Valdez and Javier Castro played strong defensively. Goalkeeper Fernando Amador tallied 23 saves.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
River Valley 48, Natomas 43
In a Tri-County Conference game that came down to the final minutes, the Falcons received a shot in the arm from senior Jacky Tanner.
She buried a crucial 3-pointer for the Falcons and they held on for the win in Sacramento.
The biggest difference for River Valley came at the free-throw line where the Falcons made 16 shots and the Nighthawks only made four.
R.V. (20-5, 7-1) will battle Inderkum for a share of the TCC crown at home on Tuesday.
In Thursday's win, Aleqse Hawkins had a double-double with 15 points and 14 rebounds. Taylor Massengale scored eight points.
Yuba City 47, Pioneer 35
Money Kaur scored 11 points and Brittany White and Alexa Montgomery added nine each to help propel the Honkers (9-16, 3-5) to a TCC win over the Patriots at home.
Faith Christian 43, Sac Adventist 40
Jessie Jimenez scored 19 points and Courtney Taylor had a double-double in the Sacramento Metropolitan Athletic League win in Carmichael for the Lions.
Taylor scored 10 points and had 10 rebounds for Faith. She nailed two clutch free throws in the final 9 seconds to lift the Lions (14-6, 7-3) to victory.
The team rallied from a five-point deficit with 3 minutes remaining.
New Life 59, Freedom Christian 19
Elicia Villafranco led four Crusaders in double-digits with a team-high 14 points and New Life rolled to a Northern Pacific Athletic Conference win over Freedom Christian in Fair Oaks.
Leanna Whiteley scored 13 points and Haley Moody and Katrina Cobb added 11 each in the win for New Life (11-9, 6-2).
Biggs 64, Los Molinos 48
The Wolverines stayed hot with their eighth win in nine games.
Darci Roles scored 19 points and dished out eight assists in the Mid-Valley League victory in the North division.
Billie Pruitt scored 17 and pulled down nine boards and Maribel Garcia scored nine.
Biggs (16-7, 4-1) hosts Quincy on Tuesday.
BOYS BASKETBALL
Sac Adventist 50, Faith Christian 44
A poor shooting night doomed the Lions in a SMAL loss in Carmichael.
Faith only shot 17 percent from the field in the first half. Coach Rick Daugherty said this loss may drop the Lions in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V power ratings.
Micah Atkins led Faith (19-5, 7-3) with 18 points and Spencer Iskikian added 13 more. Blake Lavin scored 10 for the Lions.
SMAL play continues on Tuesday at home against Sacramento Country Day.
New Life 43, Freedom Christian 38
Thomas Marquette scored 15 points, Jordan Sullivan finished with 14 and the Crusaders remained unbeaten in NPAC play with a win over Freedom Christian in Fair Oaks.
With the win, New Life improved to 13-8 overall and 8-0 in the conference.
JV GIRLS BASKETBALL
Pioneer 45, Yuba City 41
Hannah Heitman scored 15 points, but it wasn't enough as the Honkers dropped the TCC game at Honker Gym.
Jostyn Bebout and Sarah Stevens each added eight points for Yuba City (12-12, 4-4).
JV BOYS BASKETBALL
Sutter 36, Orland 26
Brandon Stephenson put up 10 points and 10 rebounds to lead the Huskies to a BVL victory.
Brad Bonnenfant dropped in eight points for the Huskies (13-10, 6-1).
Faith Christian 70, Buckingham 52
Justin Glen scored 37 points and pulled down 10 rebounds and Drew Tollenaar added 14 points and five steals to lead the Lions to a win at the SMAL tournament at Valley Christian High in Roseville.
Valley Christian 77, Faith Christian 51
Glen had 16 points and nine rebounds and Tollenaar scored 14 points, but the Lions dropped their second game of the day in their season finale.
Kyle Poppinga added 10 points and 11 rebounds for Faith Christian (11-10, 3-3).
FROSH GIRLS BASKETBALL
River Valley 60, River City 39
Meghan Bains scored 18 points and Lauren Kroeger added 10 points and made 10 steals for the Falcons (17-1, 3-0) in Sacramento.
Yuba City 51, Pioneer 44
Megan Lockhart had a double-double with 18 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Honkers to a TCC victory over the Patriots at home.
Alisha Aery scored 12 for Yuba City (13-6, 1-2).
YUBA COLLEGE SOFTBALL
American River 6, 49ers 2
Yuba held a 2-0 lead going into the sixth inning, but the Beavers erupted for six runs to take a nonconference victory in Linda.
A.R. did all of this with two outs against them.
Live Oak High graduate Lyndsey Odom-Sizemore was 2 for 3 with a triple and she scored a run for Yuba (2-3). River Valley alumnus Taylor Corbella was 1 for 2 with a double.
The 49ers continue nonconference play on Saturday at Sacramento City College in a doubleheader with Sac City and College of the Redwoods.
