PREP ROUNDUP: Sutter takes first at Savedra tourney

Every Mid-Valley area wrestling team hit the mats at Wheatland High on Saturday to compete in the 13th annual Christopher Savedra Tournament, and while each shared a piece of the honors, it was Sutter that took home the glory.

The Huskies finished the 26-team tournament on top thanks to a first-place finish by Alex Ingram in the 138-pound division and second-place finishes by Julian Kim (106), Hunter Minton (132), Mike Thompson (160), Thomas Sakurada (171), Alex Ryan (220) and Reid Melani (heavyweight). Zach-Bell Mathews (126) and Chase Gildea (182) took third for Sutter, while Ibrahim Mohsen (145) finished fourth and Alex Farmer (145) and Danny Bogert (195) each took sixth.

Wheatland finished seventh after a third-place finish by Alex Luttrell (145), fourth-place finishes by Fidel Gomez (106) and Taylor DeLozier (171), a fifth-place finish by Austin Shinn (126) and a sixth-place finish by Jon Cerboni (132).

River Valley, which finished ninth, saw Cody Sapp (160) take first, Logan Morace (171) take third and Timmy Webb (152) place fourth.

Yuba City took 10th as a team as Julian Saavedra (170) took first with four pins, Brandon Pierce (113) took second, Shannon Casaulong (152) finished fifth and Christian Diaz (heavyweight) brought home sixth.

Also finding success at the tournament were Live Oak's Habib Noman, who finished first at 113, and Kyle Lee, who finished sixth at 113. Lindhurst's Christian George took home first at 220, while teammates John Nichols (171) finished sixth and Edgar Rivera (145) finished seventh. Gridley's Haiden Johnson (120) finished fourth and Noel Tinoco (220) took sixth. Marysville's Sou Saephan (138) finished seventh.

Sutter's JV had a handful of place-winners at the Whitney Invitational.

Tyler Chambers, Chase Miles and Garrett Fulton each finished first, while Jace Heryford, Cody Jackson and Alexis Ray took second. Aiden Lang, Thomas Beers and Robert Snow took third.

BOYS BASKETBALL

PROVIDENCE CHRISTIAN TOURNAMENT

Faith Christian 77, American Chr. 64

The Lions took home another title, this time at the Providence Christian Tournament in Orland.

Blake Lavin scored 27 points and grabbed six rebounds to earn MVP honors, while Micah Atkins tallied 22 points and six steals to be named all-tournament. Spencer Iskikian, who scored nine points and grabbed four steals, was also named all-tournament.

In all, Faith Christian recorded 22 steals as a team, Sam Ithurburn corralled five and scored 11 points, while Jesse Clark scored eight points and had 10 rebounds for Faith Christian (10-0).

COSUMNES OAKS TOURNAMENT

Cosumnes Oaks 62, Lindhurst 61

Plagued by foul trouble and missed opportunities, the Blazers came up short in the championship game of the Cosumnes Oaks Tournament.

Jarrade Davis and James Trujillo each scored 12 points, Cedrick Thomas and Erick Tallman each added 10 points and Miguel French chipped in eight for the Blazers (7-3).

GIRLS BASKETBALL

HAMILTON TOURNAMENT

Hamilton 60, Colusa 33

The RedHawks fell short in the championship game of the Hamilton Tournament, despite solid contributions from three starters.

Katie Mobley scored 11 points to go with five rebounds, Cheyenne Rogers recorded six points and seven rebounds and Emily Mobley tallied eight points and five rebounds for Colusa (8-2).

Wheatland 61, Quincy 28

Faith Garza scored 23 points and the Lady Pirates coasted to a consolation win at the Hamilton Tournament.

Arianna Neuenkirk scored 10 points, and Jessica Kaufman and Kaleigh Hulett each added nine points for Wheatland (3-8).

LINCOLN TOURNAMENT

Yuba City 51, Forest Lake 37

The Lady Honkers bounced back from Friday's 73-57 loss to Oakmont with a victory over Forest Lake to wrap up the Lincoln Tournament.

Destiny Fleenor scored a team-high 19 points, while Money Kaur added nine points for Yuba City (4-7).

On Friday, Yuba City got 19 points again from Fleenor, 15 from Kaur and 14 points from Tiffany Friend.

Marysville 37, Lincoln 28

The Lady Indians took home third place at the Lincoln Tournament thanks to Holly Tarr and Rosa Gonzalez, both of whom were named all-tournament.

Tarr and Gonzalez each finished with 13 points for Marysville, which improved to 9-3 overall.

PROVIDENCE CHRISTIAN TOURNAMENT

American Christian 36, Faith Christian 34

All-tournament pick Jessie Jiminez scored 15 points and fellow all-tournament selection Alex Arnold added 14 in the Lions' loss to American Christian.

Faith Christian 46, Mercy 30

Jiminez scored a game-high 33 points and the Lions (5-3) beat Mercy to finish second at the tournament.

River Valley 67, Dixon 55

Aleqse Hawkins scored 21 points to go with eight rebounds and five steals and the Lady Falcons topped Dixon.

Danielle Soba scored eight points, Taylor Massengale pulled down 11 rebounds and River Valley improved to 6-3 overall.

The River Valley JV team topped Dixon 49-44.

Jagreet Gosal scored 17 points, while Karkiren Everest added nine for the Lady Falcons (6-3).

JV BOYS BASKETBALL

Wheatland 54, Sutter 33

The Pirates won the Colusa Tournament after disposing of the Huskies' frosh team.

Jordan Samson scored 19 points and Taylor Belogi, who was named MVP, finished with 17 points for Wheatland (5-2).

Berkeley 64, River Valley 59

Isaiah Halstead and TJ Dove each scored 16 points and Gurtej Singh added 13 points for the Falcons (4-4).

JV GIRLS BASKETBALL

Oakmont 44, Marysville 27

The Lady Indians fell to Oakmont despite all-tournament selections Kita Herrera and Casey Weber.

Kennedy Baker scored nine in the loss for Marysville at the Lincoln tourney.
