PREP ROUNDUP: Yuba City boys win 36th straight conference game
R.V. routs Pioneer; Lindhurst wins
And the streak goes on.
The Yuba City High boys basketball team kept its astounding Tri-County Conference winning streak alive on Tuesday night with a 67-57 road victory over the Inderkum Tigers.
The Honkers have won 36 TCC games in a row dating back to February 2008.
Senior Matt Hayes was lights-out with 33 points on five 3-pointers. He picked up another double-double with 16 rebounds and he also made seven assists.
On defense he had five steals.
Gagan Purewal scored nine points and Gurpreet Singh added eight for Yuba City (10-8, 2-0).
The Honkers return to Honker Gym on Thursday to host Pioneer.
River Valley 75, Pioneer 42
Manik Thiara scored 25 points to lead the Falcons in a TCC game at home against the Patriots.
Jake Phillips scored 13 points, Stuart Bradley added 11 more and DeShawn Chaney put up eight for the Falcons (14-3, 2-0).
R.V., the A-D's No. 1 ranked squad, moved to No. 18 in today's Sacramento Bee power rankings.
The Falcons will head to Natomas on Thursday to continue TCC play.
Lindhurst 80, Mesa Verde 37
Coach Bob Jensen returned to his former stomping grounds and his Blazers helped him leave Citrus Heights with a victory in the team's Golden Empire League opener.
Miguel French and Devin Ward each scored 14 points in the rout for Lindhurst (13-5, 1-0).
Cedrick Thomas added 12 points and James Trujillo scored 11 points and made four steals defensively.
Jarrade Davis cleaned up inside with 13 rebounds.
Lindhurst comes home on Friday to take on West Campus.
Orland 69, Gridley 64, OT
The Bulldogs took the defending Butte View League champs to the limit, but eventually fell in overtime on the road.
Kevin Mattos scored 16 points and Mike Fenn scored 15 to lead the Bulldogs (7-10, 0-1) in the both squads' BVL opener.
Mat Scott and Ryker Canada each added 10 for Gridley.
Capital Christian 82, Marysville 46
Angel Rodriguez and Cole Hannum each scored 10 points in a losing effort for the Indians (6-10, 0-1) at Lesta Joubert Gymnasium in the both teams' GEL opener.
Hannum pulled down nine rebounds and Rodriguez dished out five assists and tallied five steals.
Faith Christian 54, Sac. Adventist 37
Blake Lavin scored 19 points, Micah Atkins put up 12 points and the Lions stayed undefeated in the Sacramento Metropolitan Athletic League with a victory over the Capitals.
Spencer Iskikian scored eight points and made four steals and Lavin added six steals. Jesse Clark pulled down 13 rebounds for the Lions (15-2, 4-0), who continue SMAL play on Friday at Sacramento Country Day.
New Life Chr. 57, Global Youth 49
Jordan Sullivan scored 18 points, Thomas Marquette had 13 and David Tracy put up 11 as the Crusaders (7-8, 2-0) defeated the Bulldogs on the home carpet in a Northern Pacific Athletic Conference game.
Pierce 71, Trinity 59
Oscar Dorantes scored 26 points and the Bears rolled Trinity at home to improve to 2-0 in the Sacramento Valley League.
Andy Corona and Chris Tapia each added 15 points for Pierce (9-4).
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Sutter 56, Wheatland 46
Erika Larsen scored 22 points to go with 20 rebounds and the Huskies defeated the Pirates in Wheatland to open BVL play.
Jaelyn Hoffman scored 12 points and Destiny Stevenson added nine for Sutter (7-1-0, 1-0).
Arianna Neuenkirk led Wheatland (4-13, 0-1) with 17 points.
Colusa 63, Durham 57
The RedHawks stayed hot with a close victory over the Trojans at home.
Katie Mobley had a double-double with 26 points and 14 rebounds.
Savannah Miller, who was out the last two weeks with an elbow injury, returned with 10 points and three blocks for Colusa (14-2, 2-0).
Mattie Myers scored eight points to go with her seven rebounds and seven assists. Emily Mobley and Cheyenne Rogers each scored six points and Rogers had 10 rebounds.
Willows 39, Live Oak 33
Anijah Clark had a double-double but it wasn't enough for the Lions in an SVL matchup with the Honkers on the road.
Clark scored 10 points and pulled down 12 rebounds. Sister Amyah Clark also scored 10 points and tallied seven rebounds.
Paulina Heredia had eight points and six rebounds for Live Oak (11-5, 1-1).
Portola 53, East Nicolaus 36
The Spartans (15-3, 1-1) dropped a Mid-Valley League contest on the road.
Brooke Essary was the bright spot with her team-high 11 points.
Faith Christian 36, Sac. Adv. 29
Jessie Jiminez scored 13 points and the Lions moved into a tie for first place in the SMAL with a victory at home.
Shon Ritchie scored eight points to go with 11 rebounds and Courtney Taylor notched six points with 12 rebounds for Faith (9-3, 3-1).
New Life Chr. 50, Global Youth 7
Elicia Villafranco scored 14 points to go with eight rebounds and the Crusaders throttled the Bulldogs at home.
Every member of the Crusaders (6-8, 1-1) scored in the NPAC game with Leanna Whiteley scoring 12 points and dishing out eight assists.
Katrina Cobb added eight points for New Life, which continues NPAC play on Friday at Freedom Christian.
University Prep 38, Maxwell 37
Kaily McKinley scored 16 points, Jessie Otterson added 10, but the Panthers (8-8, 1-3) dropped a Tri-Cities League game to the Panthers at home.
BOYS SOCCER
Live Oak 7, Mercy 1
Armando Araujo scored three goals and Edgar Diaz added a goal and two assists to help propel the Lions to a nonleague win over Mercy in Red Bluff.
Sal Vargas and Pedro Valencia recorded a goal and an assist each, Rene Martinez scored a goal and Ricky Caratachea and Jose Cuellar both dished out assists as well in the victory.
Keeper Joel Cibrian shined in goal and Victor Ziranda, Ismael Esparza and Jose Medina all played well defensively for the Lions (11-1-1).
Sutter 5, Winters 2
Jonathan Zavala scored two goals for the Huskies at home as they cruised to a BVL victory.
Weston Childers, Collin Olmstead, and Anthonee Ramirez each added a score for Sutter (11-5-2, 4-1-1). Olmstead and Ramirez both picked up an assist as did J.D. Wilhelm.
Coach Gurdeep Bhattal credited Franklin Tarke with outstanding play on defense as well as Wilhelm, Childers and Jon Vickner.
Gridley 3, Las Plumas 0
The Bulldogs shut out the Thunderbirds in a BVL match at home with a two-goal performance from Humberto Arroyo.
Juan Velasquez scored Gridley's (5-5-1, 3-2) other goal.
Pedro Amezcua, Cristo Garcia and Ernesto Orozco all picked up assists for the Bulldogs.
Colusa 3, Los Molinos 0
Tyler Stirling and Adrian Garcia scored the goals, Gustavo Sanchez and Helio Bautista dished out the assists and the RedHawks picked their first victory of the season by beating Los Molinos in a nonleague match at home.
Moises Valdez, Manuel Garcia and Diego Rivas each shined defensively in the win for Colusa (1-5-1).
GIRLS SOCCER
Sutter 9, Winters 1
Erika Linch scored five goals, Jayden Garcia scored the other four and the Huskies crushed the Warriors in a BVL match at home.
Taylor Heryford had an assist, while Linch and Kelsey Graham each had two assists.
Sweeper Jenna Lewis played well on defense and goalkeeper Devan Reische made 10 saves for the Huskies (12-3, 5-0).
Gridley 2, Las Plumas 1
Sophomore Meranda Torres scored a goal off an assist from Alejandra Paras and Joanna Teal capitalized on a penalty kick to lift the Bulldogs to a BVL win at home.
Brenda Lozano played well defensively for Gridley (4-7-1, 2-3).
Pierce 2, Hamilton 1
Jessica Martinez scored off an assist from Melissa Martinez, Cristina Carrillo set up Stephanie Villagomez's goal and the Bears (3-4-1) picked up a nonleague victory over the Braves.
WRESTLING
Yuba City 36, Pioneer 33
The Honkers escaped from Woodland with a narrow victory in a TCC dual meet against the Patriots.
In the 147-pound division, Juan Gomez picked up a victory by pin. Shannon Casaulong (154), Jon Simeroth (197) and Christian Diaz (heavyweight) also win by pin.
Brandon Pierce (120) and Spencer Malugani (128) both won by decision. Jeff Thornton picked up a forfeit win in the 138-pound division for Yuba City (1-2).
