PREP ROUNDUP: Colusa girls open SVL with close win
East Nicolaus boys, girls cruise
The RedHawks had another nailbiter.
One night after beating Gridley by two points to conclude the preseason, the Colusa High girls basketball team had another close one, coming away with a 45-43 victory over Pierce in the Sacramento Valley League opener on Thursday night at home.
Katie Mobley put up yet another double-double with 18 points and 14 rebounds.
Mattie Myers and Yasmin Moreno each scored nine points for the RedHawks (13-2, 1-0).
Sara Nunez was Pierce's top scorer with 16 ponts and Macy Cox added 14.
The Bears (5-6, 0-1) will continue leage play on Tuesday at home against Trinity. Colusa will host Durham.
East Nicolaus 53, Esparto 38
Darleen Herrin scored 17 points, Mikayla Rolufs put up 15 points and the Spartans rolled in their Mid-Valley League opener on the road.
Denise Kendrick had seven points, while Katie Michel and Brooke Essary each scored six for East Nicolaus (15-2, 1-0).
BOYS BASKETBALL
East Nicolaus 55, Esparto 20
The Spartans jumped out to an 18-0 lead in the first quarter and didn't look back in their MVL opener.
In a game where everyone saw playing time, Riley Shill led a balanced scoring attack with nine points and Drew Orr scored eight.
East Nic (7-10, 1-0) continues league play Tuesday at Portola.
BOYS SOCCER
Live Oak 4, Durham 2
The Lions (10-1-1, 3-1) bounced back from a tough loss to Willows on Wednesday with a SVL-I victory over the Trojans at home.
Sal Vargas scored two goals and made an assist for Live Oak. Abraham Cuevas and Ismael Esparza each scored goals as well.
Ricky Caratachea had two assists and Pedro Valencia also made an assist.
Sutter 1, Las Plumas 1
Anthony Ramirez scored off an assist from Sam Ruxton and the Huskies (10-5-2, 3-1-2) earned a draw in their Butte View League match in Oroville.
Hamilton 5, Colusa 1
The RedHawks are still seeking their first win of the season after a lopsided loss to the Braves in a SVL-II match.
Eddie Reyes scored Colusa's (0-5-1, 0-3-1) lone goal with Christian Avila picking up the assist.
GIRLS SOCCER
Sutter 7, Las Plumas 0
Erika Linch scored four goals on five shots, Jayden Garcia scored the other three goals on five shots and the Huskies cruised to a BVL victory.
Linch also had three assists and Garcia made two assists of her own. Jenna Lewis also had an assist.
Shelley Hickman and Devan Reische played well in goal, while Andrea Little was also solid on defense for Sutter (11-3, 5-0).
Live Oak 1, Durham 0
Alma Gutierrez scored a goal off an assist from Bibi Alejo and that was enough to lift the Lions (7-7-4, 4-3) to a SVL-I victory at home.
Winters 2, Wheatland 0
Emma Willard had a solid day at goalkeeper for the Pirates, but Wheatland dropped a BVL match to the Warriors.
Norma Horario played well at midfield for Wheatland (4-4, 1-3).
JV BOYS BASKETBALL
River Valley 65, Woodland 52
TJ Dove scored a team-high 20 points to go with seven rebounds and the Falcons defeated the Wolves in their TCC opener.
Shawn Singh had a double-double with 17 points and 10 rebounds. Gurtej Singh scored 10 points and pulled down seven boards for the Falcons (11-5, 1-0).
Yuba City 81, Natomas 52
Tanner McAlister scored 14 points, Jamie Smith added 13 points and Jared Guerrero posted a 12-point night for the Honkers (9-9, 1-0).
JV GIRLS BASKETBALL
Colusa 37, Pierce 35
Sally Loeza scored 13 points, Ashley Ornbaun added nine and the RedHawks won their SVL opener at home.
Andrea Thomas scored eight points for Colusa (4-10, 1-0).
Yuba City 46, Natomas 44
Jostyn Bebout scored 15 points and Hannah Heitman added 10 to lead the Honkers (9-8, 1-0).
FROSH BOYS BASKETBALL
River Valley 67, Woodland 23
Jasdeep Dhatt and Rohin Basi each scored 16 points to lead the way in the Falcons' TCC opener at home.
Devin Cates scored 11 and Sarbjot Dail added 10 more for the Falcons (13-2, 1-0).
