PREP ROUNDUP: Live Oak's Mahal drains 10 3-pointers in win
Jasnit Mahal drained 10 3-pointers and finished with 32 points to power the Live Oak High boys basketball team past host East Nicolaus at the Love of the Game Invitational on Saturday night.
Harbeer Kooner added 12 points and eight rebounds and Aaron Pamma contributed eight points and 11 rebounds for Live Oak (7-4), which will host Lindhurst (11-5) on Wednesday.
Nevada Union 56, Yuba City 53
A back-and-forth home contest ended in a fifth straight loss for the Honkers despite eight 3-pointers and 35 points from Matt Hayes.
Hayes also pulled down 11 rebounds, while Nathan Gilming grabbed eight for Yuba City (8-8), which also got seven points and five rebounds from Nick Brown and six points from Gagan Purewal.
Gridley 56, Lassen 51
A balanced night of scoring help propel the Bulldogs past Lassen in the third-place game at the Oroville Tournament.
Mike Fenn scored 12, Mat Scott had 11, Kevin Mattos chipped in 10 and Ryker Canada added nine points, helping Gridley to improve to 7-9 after a rough start to the season.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
River Valley 43, Roseville 33
The Lady Falcons improved to 12-4 to record the most wins in the program's six-year history.
Aleqse Hawkins scored 10 points and snagged nine steals, Klarissa Gonzalez added seven points and Taylor Massengale scored six, grabbed eight boards and blocked two shots at home.
American Chr. 45, New Life 37
A cold third quarter plagued the Crusaders at the American Christian Tournament in Redding.
Elicia Villafranco scored 12 points, Leanna Whiteley added 10 and Katrina Cobb scored six for New Life Christian (4-8).
Maxwell 33, Pierce 24
Kailey McKinley scored 14 points and pulled down 10 rebounds to help lift the Lady Panthers past Pierce at the Love of the Game Invitational in East Nicolaus.
Jessie Otterson scored eight points and grabbed eight rebounds for Maxwell (6-5). Maci Cox led Pierce with 10 points.
WRESTLING
Gordon Hay Tournament
River Valley took second place at the 13-team invitational in Calaveras thanks to first-place finishes from Kyle Magenheimer at 182 pounds, Cody Sapp (160) and Conner Wick (195).
Also placing were Logan Morace (2nd, 170), Chris Davis (3rd, heavyweight), Jordan Davis (3rd, 220) and Timmy Webb (4th, 152).
In JVs, Ahmad Bahram (195), Marco Carrilo (145) and Jose Fernandez (128) each took third place.
Middle Town Tournament
Sutter finished second out of 22 teams in Lake County.
Zach Bell-Matthews (126), Cody Jackson (113), Alex Ingram (138), Mike Thompson (160), Danny Bogert (195) and Reid Melani (heavyweight) all took second place, while Jayce Heryford (106), Zach Clingan (120), Hunter Minton (132), Allen Farmer (145), Chase Miles (126) all took third.
Chase Gildea (182) and Ibrahim Mohsen (138) took fourth and Thomas Sakurada (170) finished fifth.
JV BOYS BASKETBALL
East Nicolaus 35, Live Oak 27
The Spartans cruised past the Lions at their home tournament.
Alejandro Heredia, Tony Alejandro and Pardeep Ginda each scored four points for Live Oak (1-8).
