PREP ROUNDUP: Marysville softball downs Lincoln in opener

Six different Indians recorded a hit and the Marysville High softball team opened its season with a 6-3 victory over Lincoln at Abby Field on Thursday afternoon.

Brina Buttacavoli got Marysville on the board with an RBI-triple and a run scored in the bottom of the first inning, while Marissa Clavelle came up big by belting an opposite-field solo home run in the bottom of the third.

Ashten Welch, Morgan Welch, Maddy Harvell and Kennedy Baker each added singles for the Indians. Baker also had an RBI.

Ashten Welch struck out seven over five innings to record the win for Marysville (1-0), which will host Sutter on Monday.

The Indians' junior varsity team also won 8-6.

Mikayla Anderson went 2 for 3 with an RBI-triple, Haley Williamson was 2 for 3 with an RBI-double and Jami Sexton tripled in a run for Marysville.

Anderson also struck out seven in a complete-game effort to notch the win.

BASEBALL

Pierce 13, Esparto 3

Oscar Sanchez went 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Taylor Cabral finished 2 for 4 with a pair of RBIs as well to lift the Bears to a nonleague victory over Esparto in Arbuckle.

Joey Hernandez ended the game in the bottom of the sixth with a walk-off RBI-triple to envoke the 10-run rule.

Cabral struck out nine over five innings to notch the win and Hernandez struck out the side in the sixth for Pierce (2-0).

Dixon 8, Marysville 2

Dylan Brown was 2 for 3 with an RBI, but the Indians dropped their Golden Empire League opener at Weldon Field to the Rams.

Steven Papadapolus was 1 for 2 and scored a run for Marysville (0-2, 0-1).

Junior starting pitcher Chad Perry went five innings and struck out nine for the Indians, who will host River Valley on Saturday.

BOYS TENNIS

Live Oak 7, Willows 2

The Lions won four singles matches and swept all three in doubles to earn a win over the Honkers in their Sacramento Valley League opener in Willows.

Edgar Yanez (6-0, 6-3), Jesus Medina (6-2, 6-4), Junaid Abid (6-0, 6-1) and Michael Catbagan (6-0, 6-1) each picked up singles wins for Live Oak (2-0, 1-0).

In doubles play, the Lions picked up victories from the teams of Daljot Singh and Yanez (8-6), Manvir Chahal and Medina (9-8 [7-2]) and Joey Gonzalez and Catbagan (8-1).

Sutter 9, Gridley 0

The Huskies blanked the Bulldogs in both teams' Butte View League/season opener at Sutter.

Sam Ruxton won in straight sets 6-2, 7-5 for Sutter.

Also winning in straight sets were Billy Thompson (6-0, 6-2), Nick Fortna (6-2, 6-0), Cody Sallaberry (6-1, 6-0) and Shelby Arvizu (6-1, 6-0).

Earning doubles victories were the tandem of Ruxton and Thompson (8-4) and Fortna teamed with Sallaberry for a win (8-1).

Sutter's other two points were earned off forfeits.

GOLF

Lincoln 205, River Valley 248

Lucas Vaughn shot a 43 and Will Jow carded a 46, but the Falcons came up short in their match at Lincoln Hills Golf Club.

GIRLS SOCCER

River Valley 3, American Canyon 0

Jasmine Vida scored two goals and Bree McKenzie added another in the shutout victory for the Falcons in Vallejo.

McKenzie assisted both of Vida's goals and Vida had an assist as well.

Defensively, Carla Ruiz and Stephanie Quick each played a solid half at goalkeeper, according to coach Manny Serda.

River Valley (1-1-1) begins play at the Inderkum Tournament today.

JV GIRLS SOCCER

River Valley 1, American Canyon 0

The Falcons improved to 2-1-1 on the year with a victory over American Canyon in Vallejo.

Christina Hong scored the game's lone goal, goalkeeper Jessica Partick recorded the shutout and Tayler Mackey played well at midfield for River Valley.
