PREP ROUNDUP: Live Oak boys hoops drop tough one
Gurbeer Kooner sank two free throws to give the Live Oak High boys basketball team a one-point lead with 10 seconds remaining, but it wasn't enough.
Trinity made a bucket with no time remaining to top the Lions 59-58 in Live Oak on Tuesday.
Alex Martinez scored 19 points and grabbed 14 rebounds for Live Oak, which slipped to 9-10 overall and 2-5 in the Sacramento Valley League.
Jasnit Mahal contributed 17 points and Aaron Pamma added 14 points and 10 rebounds for the Lions.
Faith Chr. 86, Wilton Chr. 48
Blake Lavin knocked down six 3-pointers to finish with a game-high 36 points and Spencer Iskikian added 23 points, eight assists and four steals to propel the Lions to a Sacramento Metropolitan Athletic League victory in Wilton.
Iskikian was 5 for 7 from 3-point range for Faith Christian, which knocked down 13 treys in the game.
Micah Atkins and Sam Ithurburn both finished with 10 points for the Lions (19-4, 7-2).
New Life 56, Global Youth 37
Jordan Sullivan scored a game-high 22 points and the Crusaders improved to a perfect 7-0 in Northern Pacific Athletic Conference play with a victory over Global Youth Charter on the home carpet.
Kobe Bancroft added 16 points and Thomas Marquette finished with 12 in the win for New Life (12-8).
Los Molinos 54, East Nicolaus 49
Drew Orr hit three 3-pointers to score a team-high 18 points and Riley Shill dropped in 11, but the Spartans dropped their nonleague game at home to the Bulldogs to slip to 10-14 on the year.
GIRLS BASKETBALL
Live Oak 56, Trinity 43
Senior Amyah Clark had another big night, finishing with 27 points, eight rebounds and six steals to propel the Lions to an SVL victory over the Wolves at home.
Trinity was undefeated in SVL play coming into Tuesday's game.
Anijah Clark added 13 points and nine rebounds and Paulina Heredia chipped in six points and 10 boards in the win for Live Oak (14-7, 4-3).
Colusa 57, Willows 45
Katie Mobley scored 21 points to go with her 15 rebounds and two blocks and the RedHawks picked up a big SVL win at home.
Savannah Miller added 15 points and six rebounds, Emily Mobley scored nine points and pulled down 14 rebounds and Cheyenne Rogers recorded eight points, nine rebounds and three steals for Colusa (17-5, 5-3).
Sutter 46, Gridley 34
Erika Larsen scored 17 points, pulled down 20 rebounds and blocked six shots to lead the way for the Huskies in a Butte View League game at home.
Jaelyn Hoffman chipped in 14 points for Sutter, which improved to 10-13 overall and 3-3 in league.
Marysville 67, Mesa Verde 35
Holly Tarr scored 16 points and grabbed 14 boards to help pave the way for the Indians in a Golden Empire League win at Lesta Joubert Gymnasium.
Rosa Gonzalez scored 17 points and Ellie Fisher chipped in 10 for Marysville (13-10, 3-4).
Winters 54, Wheatland 33
Pennelope Zamora led the Pirates with 11 points, Arianna Neuenkirk chipped in eight in the BVL home loss.
KiKi Sappa scored five points and recorded seven rebounds, while Faith Garza corralled five steals and seven boards for Wheatland (6-17, 1-4).
East Nicolaus 51, Los Molinos 37
Brooke Essary scored 12 points and Darleen Herrin added 10 to lead the Spartans to a nonleague win over the Bulldogs at home.
East Nicolaus improved to 19-5 on the year with the victory.
New Life 49, Global Youth 7
Haley Moody scored a game-high 18 points in just three quarters of play and the Crusaders rolled to an NPAC victory over Global Youth Charter on their home carpet.
Leanna Whiteley scored 15 points and Elicia Villafranco added seven in the win for New Life (10-9, 5-2).
BOYS SOCCER
Willows 2, Live Oak 1
The Lions scored a goal in the fifth minute but were shut out for the remainder of the game and slipped to 16-2-2 overall and 5-2 in SVL-I play.
Joel Cibrian turned in his best performance of the season in goal with nine saves, while Edgar Diaz scored the lone goal off a rebound.
Esparto 3, Colusa 1
The Spartans scored two goals in the first half to hand the RedHawks a loss in a SVL-II match in Colusa.
Mauricio Ruiz scored Colusa's lone goal off an assist from Adrian Garcia.
Jose Santana, Moises Valdez and Manuel Garcia were each credited with strong defensive play for the RedHawks (1-11-1, 0-6-1).
GIRLS SOCCER
Sutter 8, Las Plumas 1
Erika Linch recorded a hat trick and handed out an assist, Kelsey Graham scored two goals and Huskies clinched their ninth consecutive BVL title with a victory over the Thunderbirds at home.
Jayden Garcia had a goal and an assist, Madison Gonzales scored a goal, Hailey Fear and Alyson Zoellin each had an assist and Devan Reische notched three saves in goal in the win for Sutter (16-3-1, 10-0-1).
Colusa 4, Esparto 1
Sami Espindola scored two goals, Rebecca Velasquez and Sandra MacPherson each recorded two assists and the RedHawks rolled Esparto in an SVL-II match in Colusa.
Velasquez scored the first goal of the match and Kaytlin Lorenzini scored Colusa's last.
Ashleigh Biggs, Nancy Lopez, Aimee Galvez and Yajaira Cruz were all credited with outstanding defense for Colusa (8-3-1, 4-1).
Live Oak 3, Willows 1
Alma Gutierrez scored a pair of goals and Clarissa Herrera added the other as the Lions cruised to an SVL-I victory over the Honkers in Willows.
Bibi Alejo dished out two assists and Berenice Aceves had one in the win for Live Oak (8-4, 4-1).
JV BOYS BASKETBALL
Sutter 58, Gridley 18
Brandon Chambers, Trace Murtha and Brandon Stevenson each scored 10 points to lead the Huskies (12-10, 5-1) to a BVL victory over the Bulldogs in Gridley.
Trinity 59, Live Oak 41
Despite being down by just five points headed into the fourth quarter, Live Oak ended up being on the wrong side of a rout late at home.
Tony Arrellano led the Lions (1-15, 0-7 SVL) with 15 points, while Steven Garcia chipped in eight.
JV GIRLS BASKETBALL
Los Molinos 35, East Nic 29
Sarah Sullivan scored 13 points and Savannah Bye added nine in the home loss for the Spartans.
Mesa Verde 22, Marysville 21
The Indians suffered a tough defeat in their home gym at the buzzer to slip to 2-5 in the GEL.
Athena Huett was credited with outstanding defense in the loss.
Willows 34, Colusa 18
Andrea Thomas scored six points, Kelly Loeza chipped in five, but it wasn't enough for the RedHawks (5-16, 2-6) in the SVL home loss.
