PREP ROUNDUP: Faith boys hoops escape with win

Despite injuries, illness and foul trouble, the Faith Christian High boys basketball team edged out Buckingham Charter 62-60 in a Sacramento Metropolitan Athletic League game at C.A. Summy Gymnasium on Tuesday night.

"It was closer than it needed to be, but that's what happens when you have a short bench and then get into foul trouble," said Faith coach Rick Daugherty.

Blake Lavin led the Lions (13-2, 2-0) with 23 points and eight rebounds, while Jesse Clark added 11 points and Spencer Iskikian chipped in 10 points and seven steals. Sam Ithurburn also grabbed five steals.

New Life 61, Pine Hills 39

Thomas Marquette scored 16 points and Carlos Ward added 13 more in a victory in Auburn for the Crusaders.

Jordan Sullivan had 12 points and Kobe Bancroft had 10 for New Life (5-8), which opens league play on Friday.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

River Valley 54, Mira Loma 31

Jacky Tanner scored a team-high 11 points and had six steals on defense to lead the Falcons in Sacramento.

Sarah Brennan scored nine points to go with eight rebounds and Klarissa Gonzalez also scored eight points.

Aleqse Hawkins had 12 rebounds and seven steals for the Falcons (13-4).

Faith Christian 54, Buckingham Charter 14

Jesse Jiminez tallied a team-high 20 points and Courtney Taylor added 11 points, 11 rebounds and five steals to lead the Lady Lions to a SMAL victory at home.

Alex Arnold scored 10 points with seven rebounds, Shon Ritchie had seven points and seven rebounds and Victoria Helm scored six points for Faith (8-3, 2-0).

Corning 40, Yuba City 33

Tiffany Friend scored 12 points and Alexa Montgomery added 10 points and five blocks, but the Honkers (6-11) dropped their nonconference game to the Cardinals at home.

Maxwell 45, Chester 43, OT

Ashley Azevedo scored 11 points including the game-winning basket with 5 seconds remaining in overtime to lift the Lady Panthers to a Mountain Valley League win at Chester.

Kailey McKinley scored 15 points and Jessie Otterson dropped in 14 for Maxwell (7-5, 1-1).

New Life Christian 59, Pine Hills Adv. 46

Leanna Whiteley scored 24 points to lead the way for the Lady Crusaders in Auburn.

Elicia Villafranco added 17 points and Hannah Hruska chipped in eight for New Life (5-8).

Marysville 40, Sutter 35

Rosa Gonzalez scored 16 points to power the Lady Indians past the Huskies in Sutter.

Bayshta Aguila chipped in nine points for Marysville (9-6), while Erika Larsen led Sutter (6-10) with 21 points and 18 rebounds.

WRESTLING

Lindhurst 69, Marysville 9

The Blazers picked up nine pins to blow past rival Marysville in a Golden Empire League dual meet in Olivehurst.

Rigo Cole (120 pounds), Ashley Taylor (132), Jesus Yanez (138), Armante Gonzalez (145), Thomas Benge (152), John Nicholes (182), Richard Yanez (195), Brandon Mason (195) and Christian George (heavyweight) each won by pin.

Jake Hughes (113) won by decision for Lindhurst.

Woodland 42, River Valley 22

The Falcons came up short against Tri-County Conference rival Woodland.

Cody Sapp (160), Logan Morace (170) and Conner Wick (195) each won by decision, while Kyle Magenheimer (182) and Chris Davis (285) each won by pin.

The Falcons JV team won 33-30 thanks to pins by Jose Fernandez (145), Jacob Dodson (160) and Karm Saran (195).

BOYS SOCCER

Colusa 1, Esparto 1

Helio Bautista scored off an assist from Tyler Stirling and the RedHawks earned a draw in their Sacramento Valley League Two match at Esparto.

Fernando Amador notched nine saves in goal, Gustavo Sanchez played well offensively and Sterling and Jose Santana shined defensively Colusa (0-4-1, 0-2-1).

Sutter 4, Gridley 3

Jonathan Zavala scored two goals, Sam Ruxton and Anthony Ramirez added one each and the Huskies edged Gridley in a Butte View League match at home.

Weston Childers and Colin Olmstead each dished assists for Sutter (10-5-1, 3-1), while Jeff Mackensen, Ricardo Navarro and Mike McPeters were credited with good defense.

GIRLS SOCCER

Esparto 3, Colusa 2

Stephanie Munguia scored a pair of goals and Micky Wilson had an assist, but the RedHawks (3-3, 2-1) dropped their SVL-II match at Esparto.

Sutter 6, Gridley 1

Jayden Garcia recorded a hat trick, Erika Linch scored two goals and Taylor Heryford added another for the Lady Huskies in a BVL match at home.

Kelsey Graham added two assists and Jenna Lewis recorded another for Sutter (10-3, 4-0).

Live Oak 1, Willows 0

Clarissa Herrera scored a goal and Berenice Aceves dished the assist as the Lady Lions (3-3) blanked Willows at home.

Wheatland 3, Las Plumas 0

Vianna Recendez scored two goals, Hannah Howard recorded another and dished two assists and the Lady Pirates (3-4) blanked Las Plumas at home.

JV BOYS BASKETBALL

Faith Christian 57, Buckingham 35

Justin Glen scored 22 points, Drew Tollenaar scored 12 with six steals and six assists and the Lions (5-5) rolled Buckingham Charter at home.

River Valley 52, Mira Loma 26

Sarah Wirrig scored 11 points and Ashlie Millington added nine for the Falcons (11-5).

Marysville 40, Sutter 28

Kennedy Baker scored 16 points to lead the Indians (3-7) past the Huskies in Sutter.

FROSH GIRLS BASKETBALL

Yuba City 40, Corning 31

Alisha Aery scored 15 points, Megan Lockhart and Jordan Coxe each recorded 10 and the Lady Honkers (10-3) topped Corning at home.

River Valley 53, Mira Loma 10

Munroop Thiara scored 11 points and Shaina Rasul and Courtney Massengale each scored nine points for the Falcons (13-1).
