YC golfer Estrada signs with San Jose State
Comments 0 | Recommend 0Before Yuba City High golf standout Justin Estrada celebrated the signing of his national letter of intent to San Jose State on Friday, his coach made him put together a "golf resume" based on all of his accomplishments.
It was eight pages.
Which, considering Estrada's immense skill on the golf course, makes sense for such a talented student-athlete.
He was the Honkers' MVP his freshman, sophomore and junior seasons. He was named all-league following his first three seasons, including winning the Tri-County Conference MVP award as a sophomore and junior. Last season, he led the Honkers to a Sac-Joaquin Division III title by shooting a 67 at Peach Tree Country Club.
"I can't think of any other golfer having these kind of stats in my 24 years at Yuba City," Honkers coach Kent Myers said.
But the two most impressive statistics of all may be Estrada's averages: A 72.75 average score over 18 holes last season and a 3.67 GPA.
Those stats attracted recruitment by UC Santa Barbara, UC Irvine and Sacramento State as well as several other schools in the West region.
But Estrada decided that becoming a Spartan was the best fit.
"The golf facilities are great, the coaches are great," Estrada said. "I felt comfortable - and that was big to me."
But don't think having such a long list of accomplishments has boosted the ego of the affable Estrada. His modest demeanor was evident amid the large crowd that gathered inside the Yuba City High gym, which was almost a carbon copy of last week's celebration for Honkers baseball standout Max Stassi, who signed with UCLA.
"Between Max and I, we've had a lot of success," Estrada said. "But probably one of the biggest things is that we don't show it."
