PREP ROUNDUP: East Nic clinches MVL-South title

The East Nicolaus High softball team cinched its second straight Mid-Valley League — South championship after sweeping a doubleheader at Esparto on Tuesday.

In a 3-0 win in the opener, Amanda Taylor went 2 for 3 with a home run and struck out nine while throwing a four-hit shutout to lead East Nicolaus to the victory. Shelby Wilson and Alanna Smith each added RBI singles as well in the win.

In the nightcap, the Lady Spartans pounded out 14 hits to win 11-1 in five innings. It was their 13th consecutive victory after a 1-10 start to the season.

Taylor struck out two while allowing five hits to record the win. She also went 2 for 2 with an RBI at the plate.

Brianna Gaytan and Alexis Smith both went 2 for 2 with an RBI, and Katelin Evans, Alanna Smith and Greta Towle each finished 2 for 3 for the Spartans (14-10, 6-0).

The Northern Section softball brackets will be released on Saturday.

New Life 15, Sac Lutheran 4

Haley Moody went 2 for 3 with a double and four RBIs and Hannah Hruska finished 2 for 4 with a double and three RBIs to power the Crusaders to a win in their regular-season finale in Sacramento.

Kiley Delozier was 2 for 3 with two RBIs and Kasey Owings went 2 for 3 with an RBI as well for New Life, which finished 4-6 in the Northern Pacific Athletic Alliance.

Hruska also struck out nine and allowed three hits to earn the five-inning win.

BASEBALL

Gridley 9, Wheatland 7

The Bulldogs upended the Pirates to spoil Wheatland's regular-season finale at home in a Butte View League matchup.

The Pirates (12-12, 5-7) were led by Justin Prince's 2-for-2 day, Michael Woods, who finished 2 for 4 with an RBI, and Nolan West and Taylor Balogi, who each drove in an RBI on a double.

No information was reported by Gridley.

East Nicolaus 23, Esparto 2

East Nicolaus 15, Esparto 4

The Spartans concluded their regular season with a doubleheader sweep in MVL - South play in Esparto.

East Nic amassed 19 hits in the first game as Tommy Sleva, Kyle Bolla, Drew Orr and Bryce Calta all doubled. Justin Ozcan had a triple.

Joel Wilson was 3 for 3, Mikey Zimmerman was 2 for 4 and Aaron Cater was 3 for 3 to lead the Spartans. Austin Scheiber picked up the win on the mound.

East Nicolaus (11-9, 4-2) won both games by the mercy rule and pounded out 15 hits in game two.

Zimmerman was 3 for 3 with a double and triple, while Taylor Souza was 2 for 2. Ozcan doubled.

Orr was the winning pitcher and finished 4 for 4.

The Spartans will discover their playoff fate when brackets are released today.

JV BASEBALL

River Valley 5, Sutter 1

The Falcons broke open a 1-1 game by scoring four runs in the bottom of the sixth innings to top the Huskies (20-5) in the regular season finale for both teams.

Cris Lamas struck out five over 51⁄3 innings and Dace Asher fanned a pair over the final 12⁄3 to record a one-hitter for River Valley, which ended the year with a 20-5 record.

Kyle Olson and Jordan Greminger both singled and drove in a run, Asher singled and scored twice and Lamas singled as well in the win for the Falcons.

BOYS TENNIS

Live Oak 6, Sutter 0

The Lions blanked the Huskies in the Northern Section Division III playoffs in Live Oak to advance to today's section championship match against Orland.

With a singles sweep, the doubles were called.

Daljot Singh (6-0, 6-0), Edgar Yanez (6-4, 6-3), Manvir Chahal (6-1, 6-0), Jesus Medina (6-1, 6-0), Michael Catbagan (6-2, 6-2) and Jose Gonzalez (6-0, 6-1) all led the way for Live Oak (14-2).
