PREP ROUNDUP: Honkers keep conference win streak alive

Tri-County Conference play was just the spark Yuba City High's boys basketball team needed to get back on track.

Matt Hayes scored 25 points and came down with 15 rebounds, Gurpreet Singh scored 13 points and the Honkers put an end to their five-game losing skid by beating Natomas 62-57 in their TCC opener at Honker Gym on Friday night.

The win was Yuba City's 35th in a row in conference play.

"We're back on the horse again," Yuba City coach Brian Davis said. "It was a good effort by the whole team. We had two starters out, but we got some good performances from the reserves."

Gagan Purewal scored eight points, Anthony Fleenor had seven points and James Van Dusen pulled down eight rebounds for the Honkers (9-8, 1-0), who were without the services of starters Nick Brown and Taylor Elkins due to illness and injury.

Faith Chr. 72, Wilton Chr. 50

Blake Lavin recorded a team-high 33 points with 10 rebounds and five assists to help power the Lions past Wilton Christian in a Sacramento Metropolitan Athletic League game at C.A. Summy Gym.

Jesse Clark added 14 points, while Micah Atkins chipped in 11 and Spencer Iskikian grabbed four steals for Faith (14-2, 3-0). Pierce 58, Colusa 53

Oscar Dorantes scored 16 points and Andy Corona added 14 to help lift Pierce past Colusa at home to open Sacramento Valley League play.

With the win, Pierce improves to 8-4, while Colusa drops to 10-5.

New Life 69, Trinity Prep 56

Carlos Ward scored 22 points, Jordan Sullivan added 21 and the Crusaders opened Northern Pacific Athletic Conference play with a win on the road.

With the victory, New Life improves to 6-8.

Durham 58, Live Oak 44

Jasnit Mahal scored 18 points, Aaron Pamma recorded 13 with 12 rebounds, but Live Oak (7-6) fell to the Trojans on the road to open SVL play.

Wheatland 50, Hamilton 35

The Pirates improved to 4-13 overall by beating the Braves in a nonleague game at home.

Shaye Milner scored 10 points and grabbed eight rebounds, while Jackson Hopking scored nine points in the win for the Pirates.

Corning 47, Marysville 36

Brandon Graves recorded nine points, eight rebounds and eight blocks, but the Indians came up short in a nonleague loss to the Cardinals in Corning.

Angel Rodriguez added eight points for Marysville (6-9), which begins Golden Empire League play Tuesday against Capital Christian at home.

GIRLS BASKETBALL

River Valley 55, Woodland 34

Twelve of 13 girls scored for River Valley, which opened TCC play with a win at Falcon Gymnasium.

Taylor Massengale scored nine points, Klarissa Gonzalez added eight and River Valley improved to 14-4 overall.

Natomas 69, Yuba City 39

Alexa Montgomery had eight points and 11 rebounds and Money Kaur dropped in seven points, but the Honkers (6-12, 0-1) dropped their TCC opener to the Nighthawks at home.

Live Oak 62, Durham 50

Amyah Clark dropped 31 points with eight rebounds to help the Lady Lions get by Durham in their SVL opener at home.

Paulina Heredia scored 19 points with 13 rebounds and Anijah Clark scored eight points to go with her 10 rebounds. Yomaira Salazar recorded eight assists for Live Oak (11-4).

Maxwell 43, Williams 42

Kaily McKinley scored 11 points, Jessie Otterson added 10 and the Lady Panthers improved to 8-6 overall with a win over the Yellowjackets at home.

Wilton Chr. 46, Faith Chr. 36

The Lady Lions dropped their first SMAL game to slip to 8-4 overall and 2-1 in league play.

Jessie Jiminez scored a team-high 12 points, while Alex Arnold added 11 and Victoria Helm chipped in six.

JV BOYS BASKETBALL

Dixon 60, Faith Christian 58

Austin Cooper scored a team-high 19 points, but the Lions dropped their game to Dixon's freshman team at home.

Justin Glen had 17 points, 16 rebounds and eight blocks and Drew Tollenaar added 16 points as well for Faith (5-6).

Durham 53, Live Oak 25

Tony Arellano scored eight points, but the Lions (1-9, 0-1) opened their SVL slate with a loss to the Trojans at home.

JV GIRLS BASKETBALL

River Valley 49, Woodland 20

Sarah Wirrig scored 14 points, Ashlie Millington added 10 and Jagreet Gasol chipped in eight points for the Lady Falcons' TCC opener at home.

With the win, River Valley improves to 12-5.

FROSH GIRLS BASKETBALL

Yuba City 56, Gridley 36

Megan Lockhart had 15 points and 10 rebounds and Alisha Aery scored 13 points to lead the Lady Honkers (11-4) past the Bulldogs.
