Faith boys cruise; RV girls lose late
Last week, the Yuba City High boys basketball team saw a late lead evaporate in a frustrating loss to Lincoln of San Francisco at Honker Gym in the Mel Good Holiday Classic.
On Thursday night, the Honkers were the ones on the winning end of a tight one.
Trailing by seven points with 2:10 remaining, Yuba City went on a late surge and held on at the end to earn a 66-65 victory over Cosumnes Oaks of Elk Grove in the opening round of the Central Valley Tournament in Ceres.
Senior Taylor Elkins led the charge by hitting four 3-pointers to score a team-high 16 points while pulling down seven rebounds for the Honkers, who moved to 6-6 on the year with the victory.
Junior Travis Blas added 13 points, Louis Mowers chipped in with 11 and Nathan Gillming had six rebounds.
Yuba City will play Brookside Christian in the second round today at 6 p.m.
Faith Christian 70, El Sobrante Christian 39
In Yuba City — Micah Atkins tallied 17 points, five assists and five steals, Justin Glen scored 16 points and pulled down nine rebounds and the host Lions opened their Faith Christian Christmas Invitational with a victory at C.A. Summy Gymnasium.
Deep Bhatti and Drew LeBlanc both scored 10, and Jordan Sullivan chipped in with nine points for Faith (10-3), which will play Delta in the second round today at 7:30 p.m.
Rio Americano 51, River Valley 49
In Lincoln — The Falcons once again fell victim to a last-second shot as they were edged by the Raiders at the Lincoln Tournament.
River Valley (7-5) led a nine-point lead in the fourth quarter slip away.
Senior Amrita Dale led RV with 13 points, Aleqse Hawkins added 12 points and Taylor Massengale was one block shy of a triple-double with 10 points, 23 rebounds and nine blocks.
The Falcons continue tournament play today at 3 p.m. against San Juan.
Lincoln 50, Wheatland 29
The host Fighting Zebras ran away from the Pirates in the opening round of their tournament.
Halen Mariano led Wheatland with nine points and three steals, while Kassidy Heuvelhorst supplied eight points and six rebounds.
Renae Lichtenberger scored six points and Paige Gasper tallied six steals for Wheatland (6-6), which faces Rio Linda at 4:30 today.
JV BOYS BASKETBALL
Yuba City 73, Linden 58
In Roseville — Parker Lowe had a double-double with 27 points and 15 rebounds as the Honkers cruised past the Lions at the Roseville Tournament.
Anthony Yang added 20 points and John Horn tacked on nine points and eight assists for Yuba City (7-5).
Lindhurst 53, Highlands 38
In Olivehurst — Rene Corona scored 24 points and Chi Her dropped in 10 to lead the Blazers (5-5) to an opening-round win at their own tournament.
Rio Linda 71, Marysville 27
In Olivehurst — Casey Carlson had seven points and seven rebounds, and Cole Atene scored seven points as the Indians (3-8) fell to the Knights at the Lindhurst Tournament.

Del Campo 60, River Valley 44
In Citrus Heights — Sukhman Janda scored 16 points and Jacob Farmer added 12 as the Falcons (2-11) dropped their opener at the Mesa Verde Tournament.
